VIDEO:Road workers in the Moscow region cut the cable, that caused a disruption in communication with satellites and on the currency exchange

As reported by numerous Russian media- at evening of November 14, 2012, during construction works on Shchelkovo highway in the Moscow region in city of Mytischi. during repairs in the PBX number 581, road workers cut the underground cable. The Russian media reported, that it was due to the fact, that the road workers forgot to warn, that they do not cut of any underground cables, as in the area of road construction is located of one of the stations of Roskosmos space communications...

FOr those of you interested in the monitoring of meteor data...I emailed the people who run the site and asked them what I was seeing and to explain it. They sent me this reply:



"This is the direct signal from our Radar Source in France, caused by Tropospheric Propagation.

Not to be confused with "Sporadic E" which is generally a summer phenomenon and occurs 60 miles up in the Ionospheric E-layer, Tropospheric Propagation ("Tropo" or "Ducting" for short) is caused by temperature inversion low down in Earth's atmosphere. Where warmer and colder layers meet, a "duct" will be formed where radio waves (typically VHF and UHF) are "piped" along the duct where they escape many hundreds - or thousands - of miles away. Foggy conditions (which are also caused by temperature inversion) are often a good indication of this happening.

When our operators see this on their respective screens they can often pick up FM broadcasts from Froggie stations 88-108MHz (mostly 100-108MHz).

At Sidmouth and along the South Coast UK we get it this strong about 8 to 10 occurrences a year, each lasting typically 2 to 3 days. In these circumstances, South Coast UK Radio Amateurs would be able to make VHF/UHF contact with Froggie Radio Amateurs. I've attached an image from Sidmouth at 18:50 this evening (Wed). When we see this on our screens, we are receiving the direct radio wave from the G-R-A-V-E-S Radar in France."

They are pinning their hopes on a fix by Thursday morning but experts are "refusing to comment" at this time other than an unofficial statement that the cause of the problem is believed to be "outside". They are hoping to regain control before scheduled undocking on 19th November, where US astronaut Sunita Williams was due to return to Earth. Officials refused to comment on what would happen in the event of an emergency requiring a maneuver be required to avoid space junk such as happened to avoid debris from Iridium 33, just 2 weeks ago.

Yes, I get it. It basically means that they are catching a radio broadcast from far away. Which is what I said originally. They add that when low air is colder than the air above, it acts like a mirror that can make signals "heard" from much farther away. Here in N.. Utah, when the weather is right, we can sometimes listen to Mexican radio stations (that are actually from Mexico).

Apparently the cable was broken two years ago and it was considered sabotage. Todays fault is less than 24 hours after Russia launched their latest military communications satellite. It is expected to take days to fix.

Confirmation no evasive action would be manageable for satellites and space station whilst the connection is lost.
