Benghazi Security Chief Assassinated - Petraeus's Deal w/ Libyan Militants Didn't Last. Are More CIA Executions Planned?
One detail that come out in Petraeus Scandal - Petraeus paid a secret trip to Libya on October 31st.

October 31st was an extraordinary day in Libya. Libyan tweeters (who are closely associated with interim Libyan Gov't) were tweeting about a Coup in Tripoli...A member of the Libyan Parliament went on TV & said parliament had been stormed...Americans closely associated with the revolution were tweeting that the new Prime Minister was "out". Libyan TV stopped providing coverage and just played music...

Libyan tweeters contacted the international media (including JomanaCNN - CNN's Middle East producer) but NOTHING was reported in Western Media.

The next day, the first western media reports appeared. They reported that Islamist militias stormed & occupied the GNC (Libya's parliament). They suggested Parliament was not in session - it had been in session, but it was "suspended" due to the "protests." The Western media also reported that journalists were being beat up...

This stand-off or potential coup lasted for 2 days. The militias would not leave unless the entire government resigned or they were put in charge of all government ministries with a security function. In other words, they demanded that the new gov't leave now or put them in charge of all the guns (and thus all the power)..

Then, for some unexplained reason the protestors withdrew on November 2nd...Did Petraeus go to Libya to get the Islamists to back off?

Note - Official story was that he went to determine how compromised US was after storming of Benghazi CIA station...(fact-finding mission)

But Gov't buildings were occupied during his trip. Libya's PM & President made a big show of being seen (under heavy security) in public places. Why/How would you meet w/ Libyan officials about an event that happened 2 months ago (Benghazi attack) - when they are making "proof of life" appearances...

If Petraeus was able to make the Islamists "stand down," doesn't that prove once and for all that the US controls the Libyan Islamists? The same guys who are still fighting in Syria...

Note - Petraeus's fix may have been temporary. On 11/20/2012, Benghazi's security chief was assassinated and there are reports of clashes involving Islamist militias.

I'll repost tweets & articles about coup/militia stand-off that was going on during Petraeus' trip to Libya..

Here are James Wheeler's Tweets from the time...

James Wheeler is an American who keeps showing up when things get interesting in Libya. He was an international cause célèbre when he was arrested by Gaddafi in 2011. Back then he claimed to be a journalist. He was not a journalist. Later, he claimed to be a volunteer Thuwar (revolutionary)... One Libyan tweeted, I know you & your type, you carry a sat phone, not a gun..

James Wheeler was in Tripoli visiting gov't officials on Halloween

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
10/31/12, 6:58 PM
Just hung up the phone from a call with a Misrata katiba friend at the Rixos. He said "Everything's good. Ali Zeidan is out." #libya

Note - Zeidan is GNC Prime Minister (Interim Gov't of Libya)

Benghazi Youth (@LibyaSteadfast)

@wheelertweets By out you mean hes safe, or as in they beat him out of his position, as in real coup d'etat?

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
10/31/12, 7:04 PM
@LibyaSteadfast He meant out as in not prime minister. There was plenty of noise in the background but no gunfire.

Benghazi Youth (@LibyaSteadfast)
10/31/12, 7:08 PM
@YvonneSnitjer Not only is there no PM, this means they removed him by force. BIG fucking deal. @wheelertweets

Next Morning Wheeler visits Rixos & Gov't Buildings - all occupied..

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
11/1/12, 6:30 AM
#Libya: I left the Rixos an hour ago. Tripoli katiba guarding it. Security personnel who were at GNC yesterday were forced out last night

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
11/1/12, 6:38 AM
#Libya: When I arrived at the Rixos street blockade 2 hours ago, the last of the hotel guests was being helped to her car by a bellman

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
11/1/12, 6:49 AM
#Libya: I had an appointment at the integrity commission this morning, across from the Rixos. But no staff there today. All closed down.

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
11/1/12, 7:24 AM
#Libya: The frustrated Tripoli katiba outside the Rixos this morning said they haven't been paid all year. This is a mess, not a coup.

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
11/1/12, 7:46 AM
@ArmchairArab Because many in major media and twitter last night and this morning were saying the GNC was now secured by army or SSC. Wrong.

James Wheeler (@wheelertweets)
11/1/12, 7:50 AM
@ArmchairArab No. The Rixos/GNC grounds are under the control of katibas. The GNC itself is people, and they not there.

This is just one of thr many problems coming out of libya. There seems to be a purge taking place within our military.

Obama is getting rid of the leaders who stand with israel as well as the ones who hold critical info on how bungled the obama foreign policy formula has become.

Im with you though that there is no denial any longer that thr usa is coperating with the rebels in libya as well as syria.

The deeper question is why..

I truly have been led to believe that there will be a major annoincement soon coming that the obama admin will publicly announce a position change that will change the way america interacts with theiddle east. They will partner with iran. Try to work as allies in the region by disenganging with israel.

Whats awrful is that in some places in thr world we are clearly aidimg and assisting al queda while fighting them in war in other spots.

Nothing makes sense with this administration.

Or perhaps, there had been a coup de tat in americas military that was uncovered as a way to undermine the president. It happened under kennedy, it could have been done again.

there is a patina of democracy...

there is an elected gov't that is arguably in charge...

many of the elected leaders are Islamists - but there is an elected gov't...

that almost ended 10/31....

It was strange...I was watching it from a distance...lump in my throat...worried about all the Libyan Americans (CIA assets) in Libya...

If you followed my Bani Walid Libya thread...I was posting about this as it happened. I deleted most of those posts (remnants remain on the thread)...Why? Some of the tweets I posted were from ladies in Tripoli (with kids). I'm still worried about them...The tweets re-posted are from people who can take care of themselves...

Anyway, there was the major event in Tripoli and it wasn't in the MSM - I couldn't believe it...because the important gov't buildings had been seized...

The Islamists were demanding that their people be put in all the key gov't positions...

But then it just ended....It was like someone called them off...

And the CIA Director left US on 10/31 and arrived in Libya 11/1. He was there in the thick of it..

AP Article from November 1st...

Around 200 mostly armed protesters and militiamen occupied an area near Libya's parliament building on Thursday, blocking nearby roads and beating up journalists in protest of the country's new Cabinet.

For the third day in a row, the disgruntled protesters and armed men held a sit-in against the new government formed by Prime Minister Ali Zidan and endorsed by Libya's Congress on Wednesday.

Some from the crowd kicked and punched journalists who managed to pass the gates of the convention center that hosts parliamentary sessions. An AP reporter was among those beaten.

AFP Article from November 1...

Nearly 100 Libyan fighters backed by artillery have circled and occupied the national assembly in protest over the new prime minister's cabinet lineup, an AFP journalist said on Thursday.

The demonstration which erupted on Wednesday night has drawn dozens of former rebels from Tripoli and other cities, some of them formally affiliated with the defence and interior ministries.

“What is happening and the scale of what is going on is very grave,” said Othman Ben Sassi, an official linked to the national assembly, which was not in session on Thursday.

He said ex-rebels were occupying the assembly and other official buildings.

Traffic leading to the assembly and the luxury Rixos hotel was blocked by a dozen 4x4 vehicles and pickup trucks mounted with artillery, said the journalist at the scene.

Libya Herald Article from November 1

Libya’s General National Congress (GNC) was forced to suspend its Thursday sessions due to repeated incursions by the thuwar (militias) earlier today.

The demonstrators had continued their overnight protest in opposition to some members of Prime Minister Zeidan’s newly approved government. At some stages Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday those charged with securing the GNC building seemed to lose control.

Shots were fired in the air and there was a fear that things could get out of hand as the demonstrators seemed able to occupy the GNC hall at will.

More Iraqi suicide bombers came from Derna than from any other city...

Current Gov't is Dominated By CIA...

Libya's current transitional gov't is the GNC. It's appointed President & PM are the de facto President & PM of Libya..

background on new President & PM of Libya...

President -

Mohamed Yousef el-Magariaf (current GNC President), founded the national Front for the Salvation of Libya (NFSL) in 1981... The NFSL launched a wide campaign to topple the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, establishing a short-wave radio station, a commando military training camp and also published a bi-monthly newsletter, Al Inqadh (Salvation). According to various sources, the group was supported by the government of Saudi Arabia, and the United States' Central Intelligence Agency.

Prime Minister

Ali Zeidan served as a diplomat for Libya during the 1970s, serving in India under Ambassador Mohamed Yousef el-Magariaf. Both men defected in 1980 and went on to form the National Front for the Salvation of Libya.

Congress wants to know why David Petraeus took a classified trip to the country where U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens was murdered—and what the general found out while he was there....

Thus far, the CIA has not turned over the report from Petraeus, who resigned last week after acknowledging having an adulterous affair. One Senate staffer who works on intelligence issues said the CIA has told the Senate Intelligence Committee that the agency has not yet finished processing the report.

“The CIA intends to provide its oversight committees the information they are looking for on Benghazi,” a spokesman said on Tuesday.

The Petraeus visit to Libya helps explain why both Democrats and Republicans have insisted that he testify to Congress on the Benghazi matter. On Tuesday...

Note - Why did the protestors (with anti-aircraft guns) leave?

They were occupying the Rixos Hotel....GNC is housed in a conference center on the grounds of the Rixos....

They had cleared the hotel of guests....

If you've followed Libya closely...you'll remember the "Thuwar" love luxury hotels. Some of their leaders have been living in the Rixos & the Corinthia for months...

They had the entire hotel...Why would they leave w/o one demand being met?

They weren't forced out...There is no army... Army functions are performed by "Libya Shield" and the protestors were Libya Shield...

What did Petraeus give them?

Must have been good. This started b/c they didn't like the new cabinet....
They wanted it replaced with their choices.

New cabinet will be sworn in today. Despite rumors of resignations & changes, no major cabinet changes so far...

They just gave up....

Here's the most recent report on Cabinet...

The major security related ministers (the ones as issue) are Defense, Interior, and Justice... The Islamists also wanted to name the Minister of Religious Affairs...

Looks like one of the key ministers is out..(maybe)...there is appeal process..

The Integrity Commission has ruled that four members of Prime Minister Ali Zeidan’s cabinet which is to be inaugurated tomorrow should not hold office. They are the proposed Interior Minister Ashour Suleiman Shuwail, Ali Mohammed Muhairiq (Electricity), Abdulasalm Bashir Duabi (Higher Education) and Muaz Fathi Al-Khoja (Minister for Relations with Congress).

It's cultural....

It's very common for militia leaders to demand an audience with the GNC President/PM. They are constantly forced to travel around the country to meet with various picayune militia groups... I think it's relates to Libya's tribal culture...Anyone who feels wronged has the right to take their complaints to the tribe's elders...

Just this week a militia from Zintan forced its way into the President's home demanding an apology for nice things Gov't officials said about a neighboring town...

So yes, if the militias were being asked to make a perceived sacrifice, they would demand a high level audience...

Personal relationships/contacts are also very important in Libya....

The lower level guy who had built up trust with w/ the "Thuwar" was dead (Ambassador Stevens). The new guys wouldn't have great contacts at this point, and would thus be less effective.. But a high-level guest would have clout (they treat guests well & they respect leaders (elders))

Admittedly, it's conjecture that he stopped the coup...

But why would the CIA Director visit a country when a coup is happening? If it was just Benghazi fact-finding, wouldn't he move the trip back a week?

Article on Libyan Investigation into Benghazi Attacks...(from yesterday)

Two months after the American ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in assaults on U.S. facilities here, there have been no arrests of suspected attackers, and Libyan officials say it is unlikely any will be made anytime soon.

Officials in Benghazi said that the first problem with pursuing those responsible for the attacks is that police officers here are afraid to move against the Islamist extremist suspects, who, like many in this country, are members of militias that are better armed than state security forces.

And that is just the beginning. Officials say it’s uncertain who is in charge of investigating the case and who has the authority to issue arrest warrants, should it come to that. Even if charges were to be brought, there is no proper court system for prosecuting anyone.

In Benghazi, the deputy interior minister said the prosecutor is in charge. The head of the Supreme Security Council, which has responsibility for organizing an army, believes the police are in charge. The prosecutor said he has no idea who is in charge. Some brigades created during last year’s uprising and used to filling the security void here don’t recognize the Tripoli authorities as in charge of matters in Benghazi.

Okay - why did Petraeus go to Libya?

if they still haven't decided who is in charge of the investigation...he didn't meet with the chief investigator....

In fact, wouldn't a visit from the CIA Director re: Benghazi cause them to appoint a chief? (CIA calls & asks who will the Director be meeting with; Libyans have to come up w/ answer)

All of the CIA people in Benghazi were flown home the day after the attack - so they could be debriefed in Langley...

No suspects to interview/debrief...

So why did he go there?

For two months now, politicians in Washington have argued furiously over who is to blame for the attack against the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi... There is another controversy roiling about that disastrous assault: In Benghazi itself.

There, Libyans are questioning why officials have failed to place a single suspect in custody or, for that matter, to conduct many probing interrogations, despite the attack’s damaging impact on Libya’s international standing.

"There is no serious investigation being undertaken by the Libyan authorities,” Rami el-Obeidi, the former intelligence chief for the Libyan rebels’ National Transitional Council, told TIME by phone on Wednesday. He says that “the Libyan authorities are unwilling to conduct a proper investigation into the terrorist attack, as this would expose them to retaliation from extremist militias.”

Background on the Missing Trip Report...

Feinstein told MSNBC that the intelligence community has refused to give her access to a trip report from Petraeus’ visit to Benghazi last month....

“We have asked to see the trip report. One person tells me he has read it, and then we tried to get it, and they tell me it hasn’t been done,” Feinstein said. “That’s unacceptable. We are entitled to this trip report. And if we have to go to the floor of the Senate on a subpoena, we will do just that.

Re: Benghazi Security Chief Assassinated - Petraeus's Deal w/ Libyan Militants Didn't Last. Are More CIA Executions Planned?
Thoughts since the Pertaeus testimony?
 Quoting: trebien

We don't know what he said in the closed door session, except that he reported that the Benghazi attack was a terrorist attack...

Keep in mind there are two reports... All of the foxnews hysteria is over the intelligence report on the Benghazi attack (the talking points administration officials used in the days after the attack)...There is also an intelligence report on his Halloween trip to Benghazi (the trip report)

There has been absolutely no mention of the trip report...except that Feinstein complained that she hadn't received it. I expect that there will never be any coverage of the trip report...

Has anyone else in the United States even mentioned what was happening in Libya on Halloween? I haven't heard anything...

If I wasn't still following Libyan politicians on Twitter, I wouldn't have known about it....

Do you know how hard it is to find a MSM report that actually lists the dates that Petraeus was in Libya? Most reports say he was in Libya "last month"... It was only Mary Wheeler's blog that gave the exact dates...

30 years from now someone will write an exposé on the CIA...(maybe)...

The big story will be how the CIA/Western Intelligence overthrew Gaddafi..The fact that the CIA delayed the Islamist take over of Libya by a few months may get a chapter (maybe)...

More evidence that Libya is going to hell in a hand basket (hold the hand basket)....

David Bachmann left yesterday. He tweeted when he arrived in Vienna "I'm glad to be alive..." His "proof of life" tweet about the Libyan PM is posted on page 1...

David is a "commercial counselor" attached with the Austrian embassy. He was interviewed extensively when Shokri Ghanem was found floating face down in the Danube....

David left Libya for a very brief period in 2011. He was back in Tripoli before Gaddafi died... I've seen Gaddafistas threaten him over twitter, and it never fazed David...

When there was still gunfire in Tripoli in late 2011, he was famous for tweeting "it's only a wedding"

It's not safe for him to be in Tripoli now....What does that say?

Here are his "exit" tweets -

Instructed to fly out of #Tripoli immediately after a serious security incident involving myself #Libya

"Truth is a daughter of time" and when time comes, u will read details. 4 the moment I am happy to be out of #Libya

Two weeks ago PeterBrit was silenced (he's fine & back in Libya) but he's not writing anymore....

This thread actually might be important - but we can't tell because your train of thought is so chopped up it is impossible to follow.

How about a quick summary in your own words - not cut and paste - that clearly describe what has happened.

I've read this thread twice and It is still unclear …

For those that don't follow this part of the world, fill in the details that you think we already should know, because we don't.

That is why you are not getting the action on this thread that it deserves.
