Burning books is one step before burning infidels. Freedom is about anyone being able to do anything without harming anyone else's freedom. Its the opposite of the cartesian product, which the point is exactly the get the perfect match between two objects(check Venn diagram). In freedom the main goal is everyone having their own freedom, doing whatever they please to, without harming somebody else's freedom.

There's no simple way to do that, but love one another.

burning books is suppression of ideas. ideas that go underground can never be debated. it's the same as advocating removal of free speech for some, but not others. eventually, your ideology or speech becomes the "them" to suppress. i hate nazis, but i'd rather have them strutting and speaking on street corners, where the passing dope can debate their positions, than have them spouting their garbage in a basement, where nobody but those that agree can hear. your commitment to liberty is proven by you standing up for the rights of your enemy, not by those you agree with.

Those are the two most destructive books ever written in my opinion.

How can you tell what Shakespeare would like or not? Is too much presumption of you, to think that you and Shakespeare think alike, or worst, you can think better than him did. People are unpredictable. NEVER underestimate the infinite capacity of someone to surprise you. You can live with someone for about 50 years, and one day, they surprise you.

As I said, you have it. But there are people that will be annoyed with that, so, you'll harm this person's freedom. I repeat, there's no simple way to have total freedom to everybody. Freedom itself, is based on respect and tolerance, you may dislike someone's reading habits, but freedom, real freedom, will be you having a rational conversation with this person, explain your point of view and hear his/hers arguments. This is pretty much it, very hard to explain thou...

In 1984 by Orwell, they "memory hole" was to burn books that went against the regime.

It's a propaganda tool to make us stupider, unable to think for ourselves and to remove ideas that can be harmful to TPTB.

It's dangerous to advocate and participate. I don't believe burning a book is right, or an answer. (Idiots that misuse the book is a different story.)

Thank you all for responding. Perhaps "burn" is a bit too extreme because I do not believe in book burning either. However, certain beliefs are like a cancer in the mind of humanity and have caused untold misery or millions upon millions throughout the course of history. Are there any ideas as to how to counter or excise these ideological diseases for the benefit of future mankind?
