Ya, we saw this about 2 weeks ago. Turns out it's an harmonic of a signal broadcasting over the horizon from them. That's skipping of the ionosphere. Propagation.

Re: Wow! Meteor Scan is humping!
Last time it was like that it was said it was because of the October meteor shower, whatever that was... Not sure if there is a regularly scheduled shower happening now though. Not really a meteor tard.

Here's that other thread.

Meteor scan WTF!!!

And a quote.

"Hope this helps you guys with the meteor scan frequency... We went through this a little over a month ago and this was the response from N.L.O.

I got an email back guys!

We've been observing the N.L.O. Live Meteor Detection where something has been coming in for almost two hours now...

Has something like this happened before?

We're also listening in at Spaceweatherradio.com and it is being detected there as well.

Any information would be greatly appreciated - thank you.

"This is the direct signal received from the over-the-horizon radar we use, caused by a natural phenomenon known as tropospheric propagation [link to en.wikipedia.org] This occurs on our system on average about 3 or 4 times a year and typically lasts 1 – 2 days on each occasion. It is an indication of radio “lift” conditions in western Europe."

Nice catch! But it appears to be a repeating cycle (if you look at the shape of the spikes)

I believe that the other poster nailed it with the harmonic.

Radio is a line of sight kind of thing. So the waves travel in a line, they don't curve around the Earth. So, the Earth has an Ionosphere made up of charged particles,ie. electrons, ions. It wraps around the Earth at verying altitudes. When conditions are right, the Ionosphere acts like a mirror bouncing the radio waves back to Earth.. around the curve of the Earth. It's called Lift or Skip. It's active from the station we are discussing toward western Europe apparently. Skipping can work repeatedly. resulting in some very long distance events. In other words multiple skips. These conditons improve or increase exponentially when the Suns cycle is active. From the charging of the Ionosphere from the Solar wind, as well as CME and flair activity.

Howdy!

The site still shows the same activity. I assume if it was a "glitch" somebody would have fixed it by now. I sent off an e-mail to them. No reply yet.

Okay, it's still humping on that site. If it is the phenomenon spoken of above that happens four times a year and usually lasts one to two days then I'm gonna keep my eye on it and see if it continues.
