Re: Dish or Direct
directv seems to be overall a better and more economical choice. My mom just went through a switch from Directv to Dish because they promised all this whole home dvr this and that. When apples were compared to apples, she would have eneded up paying more for dish to get what she had with directv.

She still ended up going with dish, with some reduced services but got the whole home dver hopper, which she seems to enjoy.

Dish doesnt carry channels like AMC, so if you like breaking bad or the walking dead, you're SOL.

Re: Dish or Direct
I've had both Dish and Direct and always liked Dish better. My mom used to have Direct and I got more stations than she did for less $$$$. Another thing I didn't like is that we were all the time losing our signal when he had Direct.

We recently moved and hubby decided to go cheap this time. We don't watch much tv anyway, so we're just going with Netflix so we can watch old sitcom reruns, which is what we always ended up watching when we had satellite anyway. Of course, he had to order the Big Ten Network too, but it's still way cheaper than satellite or cable.

Re: Dish or Direct
Direct TV - Has a better interface and cleaner looking menu. Prices are higher. Also you need more signal strength than you do with Dish.

Dish - Cheaper, need less signal strength & overall better value. Not as pretty as Direct TV

Dish has AMC as of a week or so ago.

I had Direct TV for a few years and was never satisfied, so I switched to Dish. I have found Dish to be better at delivering digital TV, and on the pricing. For what I was paying Direct, I now get over twice the channels plus several of the special movie channels as well. Based off of that, I would go with Dish.

However, any choice you make, make it off of what you want, not what someone else tells you. You are paying for it, so it should be what you want.

Re: Dish or Direct
Direct tv...simpler, more user friendly...plus, dish is messed up...they lie to you when you order installation...luckily, the techs who came to install it advised us to call before they started because they knew we had not been told the truth...you have to have hoppers and joeys everywhere unless you like watching the exact same thing in all rooms..it is a mess...they are a generic, a$$ backward version of direct tv...

there are some pluses but the negatives far outweigh them...wish we had never switched...;(

^^only reason we did was because we wanted to watch the Olympics and dtv did not have local stations for our area, even if we paid for them..(that is the only negative I had about dtv)

Better picture than either Dish or Direct, local broadcasts/news, no service disruptions and it's free.

Unless you live in one of those rare isolated areas with little to no reception an antenna will provide all the programming you'll seriously ever need. Throw in Netflix and or xfinity and both of those 'D' tvs become an absolute joke.

Worth looking into at the very least.

Re: Dish or Direct
I've had them both. I started w/ Dish (10 yrs), and just recently switched to Direct. I wish I NEVER signed a contract with Direct. Their customer service SUCKS, the worst ever. Too many times the transmission has gone down -- once the notice on the TV screen said, "Sometimes excessive sunshine will cause transmission difficulties.." my husb and I looked at eachother and burst out laughing..what a bunch of BS

Also, Dish has just upgraded their infrastructure to a type of cellphone transmission/receiver setup (no more wires). I have no experience with that, but yesterday after 4 phone calls I finally got a live person who told me that to cancel my contract would be $400. Bollocks.

Re: Dish or Direct
Op you don't need either one of them. Get rid of the paid for programming, deprogram your brain of all the propaganda that you have exposed yourself and learn to think outside of the box. My family has been without cable or satellite for over a year and it has been wonderful to say the least. If you must have tv get a antenna with hd, digital capabilities to at least stay op top of local events. You do know that you can get tv over the interwebz right.

Re: Dish or Direct
Dish has had lots of improvements in the last year or so. The Hopper is a fantastic device, and the Block Buster Movie Pass is awesome too. With pricing on either one of them, they both start you off at a discounted rate for the first year, then jack up your price after that.

Direct TV has a lot of the same things as Dish, but over all Dish is leading as far as technology is concerned.

AMC is back on Dish now, but with both providers you have the risk of losing certain channels because of contract agreements with all stations. It's usually local channels that are effected by this. Usually all those are worked out within a month.

My vote is for Directv. I had Dish for many years and I (like a previous poster) paid extra to get out of the contract.

First with dish I always had signal problems and pixelation. So I would call tech support and it was always someone from India named richie Cunningham. And the language barrier made it near impossible to truly get any real help.

Then when service tech came out... They would say nothing was wrong and charge me for the service call. (Even though I paid extra for the service stuff)

Switched to Directv. And have had them for 4 years now and never a single problem. Well actually once about 3 months after installation started getting pixelation. Called them up. They came out and said the antenna settled re-aligned it for free and it has been working great ever since.

Windy days...rainy days...doesn't matter. Works perfectly.

The final reason for me to have directv instead and for me is the biggest reason....

AMC and Walking Dead!! Don't get that on dish.
