Patriots, Conservatives, Libertarians: Time to relocate to Texas

One thing has always bugged me about US politics.

How can a libertarian ever be a conservative? Aren't the conservatives all about maintaining social values while a libertarian should be about gaining social freedoms? (eg. right to abortion, freedom from government, small military, pacifism etc?)
