No matter what job you have... there is no guarantee that you will be employed for 30+ years with the same company. Those days are over. I've been let go due to restructuring, in different cities and industries, a couple of times in a short number of years. Everything in life is a risk. |

It will pay off hugely in the long run. We all have to sacrifice a little to make what we dream of a reality. Sure, you can take the "bird in the hand" but the bird that's in the bush is much better when you get it. In the end, you'll look back and realize that you should have done what mattered to you, not what mattered at the time. If you want to be a nurse, then make it so! Anonymous Coward User ID: 20193680 United States 11/14/2012 08:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Is there any other way you could get your foot in the door in the health field for income and go for nursing part time? Some Hospitals have a variety of programs. There are some tech courses that are shorter than a full nursing program that will get you a decent salary quickly and then continue to pursue full nursing degree part time. |

Like another person said, you may not be in the same spot the whole time but you will likely always be able to find a job. Guenwyfar User ID: 21285652 United States 11/14/2012 08:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, taking the new job doesn't mean you have to stay for another 12 years. Maybe, accept the position knowing it's only for a few months, and sock away some $$ while you get things lined up for what you really want to do. Quoting: Life and Love Also good advice. If you can't apply for a nursing program right now or need to get general courses first this is a very good idea. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am going to do more research tomorrow especially regarding the advice to get a job in the health field and go to school as well. Plus I like the physical therapist idea too. One thing is common, I believe the time is right for me to pursue the medical field. |
wisc_natureboy User ID: 28638254 United States 11/28/2012 10:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Three weeks ago to the day, I was fired from my job. I was a retail store manager for 12+ years. Quoting: NothingFancy I immediately started to apply elsewhere and landed an interview with another retail chain. I did well on that interview and was able to get a 2nd interview for this Friday. I started thinking though that maybe I should go back to school for nursing which is what I always wanted to do but chose a different path for myself after high school. Financially, I can make it work but it will be very risky. My parents think I should go for the sure thing with the job but I am afraid to put another 12 years somewhere and have this happen again. At least with nursing, the job is in demand or at least I think it is. I cannot do both as I am sure you are all aware that there are no "set" schedules in retail especially as an assistant manager to work school around. My choice can not be a selfish one either because I am the sole support for my daughters. It has to be a smart decision. I am rambling at this point but I guess I am leaning towards the job decision but pursuing nursing would have been nice. Any suggestions on a way to look at this differently. Thank you :) Good luck OP. In my experience, older adults (no offense, I mean 26+) are far more dedicated to their studies than most traditional-aged students. I went back for degrees at 24 and at 30. I've taught off and on at colleges/universities for 12 years now. School is a great benefit to some and a terrible burden to others. Do whatever you can to limit/avoid student loans. You don't want to still be paying them off at 45! Study hard, nothing worth having is easy to acquire. ;-`) We all breathe the same air. .-.. --- ...- . / .- .-.. .-.. |

I start January 7th. But.....I also enrolled in classes because the retailer will work around a part time school schedule. So, I get to do both and I am very excited. Do what you think is right, taking your kids into consideration. A limited risk is worth it sometimes when you could make life for your and others that you are responsible for better.
