Advice please
Three weeks ago to the day, I was fired from my job. I was a retail store manager for 12+ years.

I immediately started to apply elsewhere and landed an interview with another retail chain. I did well on that interview and was able to get a 2nd interview for this Friday.

I started thinking though that maybe I should go back to school for nursing which is what I always wanted to do but chose a different path for myself after high school.

Financially, I can make it work but it will be very risky.

My parents think I should go for the sure thing with the job but I am afraid to put another 12 years somewhere and have this happen again. At least with nursing, the job is in demand or at least I think it is. I cannot do both as I am sure you are all aware that there are no "set" schedules in retail especially as an assistant manager to work school around.

My choice can not be a selfish one either because I am the sole support for my daughters. It has to be a smart decision.

I am rambling at this point but I guess I am leaning towards the job decision but pursuing nursing would have been nice. Any suggestions on a way to look at this differently. Thank you :)

You should have gone back to school before now. Retail is a nasty place that doesn't care about you. They'd hire monkeys to do your job if they could.

Sorry to hear of your job loss.

No matter what job you have... there is no guarantee that you will be employed for 30+ years with the same company. Those days are over.

I've been let go due to restructuring, in different cities and industries, a couple of times in a short number of years.

Just that you learned it is all that counts. But you might want to address your biased delusion that kept you from realizing the truth of that before now. ;)

Follow your dream... It will pay off hugely in the long run. We all have to sacrifice a little to make what we dream of a reality.

Sure, you can take the "bird in the hand" but the bird that's in the bush is much better when you get it.

In the end, you'll look back and realize that you should have done what mattered to you, not what mattered at the time. If you want to be a nurse, then make it so!

No worries... While you go to school, try to get a job in a medical office to help out with the bills. They will be more "forgiving" toward your school needs and probably more flexible. Immersing yourself into the field you want to be in really helps to institute change.

Re: Advice please
Is there any other way you could get your foot in the door
in the health field for income and go for nursing part time?
Some Hospitals have a variety of programs.
There are some tech courses that are shorter than
a full nursing program that will get you a decent salary
quickly and then continue to pursue full nursing degree
part time.

OP, taking the new job doesn't mean you have to stay for another 12 years. Maybe, accept the position knowing it's only for a few months, and sock away some $$ while you get things lined up for what you really want to do.

Go with what you want to do for the rest of your life. Like another person said, you may not be in the same spot the whole time but you will likely always be able to find a job.

Good luck, OP hf

Also good advice. If you can't apply for a nursing program right now or need to get general courses first this is a very good idea.

Go to school. Take day classes and work on the weekends if you still need extra money. You can also take many classes online at home, but only do this from an accredited institution such as a local college near you.

Good luck!

There were so many great responses and advice given.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I am going to do more research tomorrow especially regarding the advice to get a job in the health field and go to school as well. Plus I like the physical therapist idea too.

One thing is common, I believe the time is right for me to pursue the medical field.

Good luck OP. In my experience, older adults (no offense, I mean 26+)
are far more dedicated to their studies than most traditional-aged students.
I went back for degrees at 24 and at 30.
I've taught off and on at colleges/universities for 12 years now.

School is a great benefit to some and a terrible burden to others.
Do whatever you can to limit/avoid student loans.

Thank you for your advice. ^^^^

I actually did accept the retail job. I start January 7th.

But.....I also enrolled in classes because the retailer will work around a part time school schedule.

So, I get to do both and I am very excited.

Nursing school has never been easy, and now with Obama care who knows if it would be a wise investment or career move. Talk to some nurses and see what they have to say about it all.
