DALLAS — Texas Instruments announced Wednesday it plans to eliminate 1,700 jobs worldwide as part of a cost-cutting program.

The Dallas-based technology giant said in a statement that it will also divert investments from its wireless component business to focus on "embedded applications" with longer life cycles than the rapidly-evolving mobile market.
TI said the changes would save about $450 million by the end of 2013.

"These job reductions are something we do with a heavy heart because they impact people we care deeply about," said Greg Delagi, TI's senior vice president of embedded processing, in a written statement. "We will work closely with all employees affected by these changes to provide a range of assistance related to compensation, benefits and job search."

Re: Texas Instruments to lay off 1,700 workers.
This layoff has nothing to do with US politics and everything to do with T.I. not being able to successfully market some of their generic chips for wireless devices, due to a trend in mobile devices that are calling for very specific chips unique to each type of device.

Asian manufacturers like Samsung and some Chinese firms have been able to far outpace TI in the ability to design a custom chip, retool their production line, produce it, and ship it in record time and quantities. Other makers are choosing to make their own chips now instead of buying off-the-shelf.

This is about the changing landscape of handheld wireless devices, nothing to do with our domestic politics.

You should be more disgusted with the CEO's that are refusing to make less money due to taxes, then Obama. I hate Obama as much as anyone, but all these big layoffs are, is hot shot CEO's waving their dicks around saying we'll fuck people over if you fuck us over.

Re: Texas Instruments to lay off 1,700 workers.
Let me help clear up some confusion. Now above all else it's absolutely terrible that 1700 people are going to loose their jobs. Not all in the US, but it just compounds the economic vlimate that we already have in this country.

That being said, TI has been looking to close the cellular division for at least 2 years. It was laid out at the beginning of the year that there was an extremely high chance that cellular (baseband) would be closed by the end of 2012. So internally we knew this was sure to happen. That's why there was a rumor a month or so ago about trying to get Amazon to buy the OMAP part of cellular since we were trying to offload some of it.

Now why layoff all those people? Well the economy definently isn't helping. The company as a whole has gotten very lean this year. Still turning a profit, but its getting smaller each year. But cellular specifically is becoming a very cut throat sector. The 2 main players are Samsung and Apple. They both want to have better control of their products and they both want to keep as much profit as possible. So you can either work for pennies making products for Apple or Samsung or you can try to survive on the scraps left over with the rest of the other cellphone makers. Samsung already has the ability to make their own silicon, and Apple is working on a solution.

So TI decided to just get out of the sector altogether and focus on something more diverse like analog. Plus most people don't want to pay anything for these very complicated smart phones.

TI doesn't like to put all its eggs in one basket and so far it's worked for the last 12 years (the big crash back in 2001 that the industry hasn't recovered from). They give me a comfortable life so I am thankful.

Now of course what would my post be without some doom and dirty laundry so here you go.

1. By cutting them by the end of the year they will not be elegible for profit sharing if they are not employed through the last week of the year. So a good chunk of those people (US employees at least) would have probably got on average $4-6K. So TI will save a boat load of money just from that. I have seen this happen several times. I have seen large groups of people layed off late November and brought back mid January. I think it's questionable.

2. TI actually blocks GLP specifically. The reason?

TI makes very few products with their name on it. DLP TV chips and calculators are about it. But what we do is engineer and manufacter products for other companies and let them put their name on it. Chances are very high that just about every electronic device you have has something in it produced by us, even if you don't see our name on anything. We're not the 3rd largest semiconductor company because we sell a bunch of calculators :)
