All they have to do is appear in person before a U.S. consular or diplomatic officer in a foreign country (normally at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate) and sign an oath of renunciation."

You miss the point of why people are doing that.

We all know we can't secede from the Union.
We wanted to make a statement that we are not happy with the direction Obama is taking us. That is all there is.

Ditto, that is the point. If we didn't make a statement, they would think we are all gung ho about the way they are doing things. Even if it is just making a point, it is a good point nonetheless.
