Do you guys realize that Labor Unions were created by the Communist Party early in the 20th Century? I am talking even the AFL-CIO. It was and is a means to control business and have a ready force in place should fighting break out. Get rid of every damn union in this country and we will be a lot better off. |

I agree with you 100% with who stated the unions .... even marx stated that that workers unions was the first step to turning a capitalist country into a socialist country ......but But I believe that the reason it was so easy to get workers enrolled in workers unions in the first place was because the owners of the giant corporations weren't being fair with their employees.....just like the story of Scrooge ......there are plenty of Owners and CEOs and Boards that operate just like that ...not just capitalist (which isn't a bad thing) ....but greedy selfish capitalist(which is a bad thing ) I honestly see both sides of this coin |

Back in the day of the sweat shop and child labor, I agree that people were being exploited. These days, that environment no longer exists. Working conditions are relatively equal everywhere. The company I used to work for was driven out of the US by the Unions. Maybe you've heard of them. E.J. Brach Candy Company in Chicago, Il. I was a manager there and the entire workforce were members of the same Union as the Hostess company (Bakery and Confectioners Union) At Brach's we could hardly keep up with union demands. Finally, the company moved to Mexico to get away from the high labor cost. Brach's at one time employed 5,000 people. They were located in one of the worst area's of Chicago and they employed a large group of local people. You might say the entire West side of the city depended on Brach's for their livelihood. Now it is gone. So who won in the end? Nobody. |

Yes, the cakes have preservatives, but everything has preservatives. They also make bread, from cheap white bread up to very good whole grain stuff that does not have preservatives, but is double packaged for freshness. It is a green company, because they can provide staple foods with a much smaller carbon foot print than every oven in a city making bread for the next day. Nope, lets give some skull and bones NYC banker a $100,000 bonus. Like the Auto, plastics, electronics, textile, and every other manufacturing sector. Did you know that China has been at war with our manufacturers for over 25 years? Fuck the Republicans and the Democrats. The economy won't get better until our politicians protect our manufacturers. This is slow rolling doom that is about to fall off a cliff. |

Now it is gone. So who won in the end? Nobody. I remember that company I also remember my dad, when I was a kid, shouting at the radio as he heard about all the strikes by the Longshoremen, the union which ran the ports of NY They were always on strike in the 50s and 60s, paralyzing the city ports...finally many firms shut down, others moved some of that activity to NJ...where it was cheaper for a while NY City is one of the world's most amazing natural ports...the west side of manhattan used to be all piers and businesses revolving around the port, bustling with trade. In the 1960s NYC was the busiest port in the world. Now it's basically unused If you've ever been to NYC, you'll see all the pier foundations, rotting in the river. A few have been turned into handball courts or other BS... My dad grew up in NYC back in the 30s and 40s and he would get close to tears as he watched businesses driven out of that city by unions, taxes and idiot regulations...until it finally was at the edge of bankruptcy in the 1970s so who wins? And by the way...they're still at it: A possible longshoremen’s strike that could cripple the Port of New York and New Jersey and other ports on the Gulf and East Coasts is looming, threatening to idle countless workers and drive up the consumer costs as the holiday season approaches. [link to www.nj.com] From Crain's: James Capo, head of the U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents container carriers and port operators in the negotiations, has accused the union of taking advantage of loose overtime rules to make the New York-New Jersey ports the most expensive in the world. The alliance claims one-third of ILA workers there make more than $200,000 per year, not counting bonuses. Those bonuses include container royalties that were negotiated in the 1960s to protect workers from job losses due to automation but now serve as a guaranteed payment of more than $15,000 annually for East Coast workers, the alliance contends. "Over the years, we've got a number of inefficient work rules and practices that have crept into the operation and need to be addressed," Mr. Capo said. "It drives our costs up and makes us noncompetitive." Read more: [link to www.crainsnewyork.com] Last Edited by IssueX on 11/15/2012 09:26 AM |
