Do you have any idea how many restaurants, marinas, and various mom and pop small businesses were completely destroyed by Sandy?! Not to mention how many businesses were damaged and will take a while before they can reopen. This is the most densely populated part of the country. Yes, at least 78,000 people lost their jobs, easily. |

We have been well and truly hijacked. I've told all my friends and family to get out of the stock market NOW and put their money into physically-held precious metals. Unfortunately, we are going to look back on these troubled times as "The Good Old Days". This would be a great year to give Mountain House freeze dried #10 cans as Christmas gifts. You can't eat an iphone. |

I don't know a lot about the Bureau of Labor but I'm pretty sure they have to collect that data from all the states. I'm not denying the impact of Sandy, I'm just wondering if the job losses caused by Sandy are really reflected in this report. If not, the NEXT report may be even more stunning than this one. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27352798 United States 11/15/2012 09:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | From the Bureau of Labor Statistics FAQ page: [link to www.bls.gov] <<< How can unusually severe weather affect employment and hours estimates? In the establishment survey, the reference period is the pay period that includes the 12th of the month. Unusually severe weather is more likely to have an impact on average weekly hours than on employment. Average weekly hours are estimated for paid time during the pay period, including pay for holidays, sick leave, or other time off. The impact of severe weather on hours estimates typically, but not always, results in a reduction in average weekly hours. For example, some employees may be off work for part of the pay period and not receive pay for the time missed, while some workers, such as those dealing with cleanup or repair, may work extra hours. In order for severe weather conditions to reduce the estimate of payroll employment, employees have to be off work without pay for the entire pay period. About half of all employees in the payroll survey sample have a 2-week, semi-monthly, or monthly pay period. Employees who receive pay for any part of the pay period, even 1 hour, are counted in the payroll employment figures. It is not possible to quantify the effect of extreme weather on estimates of over-the-month change in employment. In the household survey, the reference period is generally the calendar week that includes the 12th of the month. Persons who miss the entire week’s work for weather-related events are counted as employed whether or not they are paid for the time off. The household survey collects data on the number of persons who usually work full time but had reduced hours, or had a job but were not at work due to bad weather. Current and historical data are available on the household survey’s most requested statistics page at [link to data.bls.gov] >>> |

Most places stay open year round, and it's not like the damage was solely done to the oceanfront... You can also factor in the thousands of "clean up" and aftermath jobs in the trades that have been created...I've been through major hurricanes...there is always a boom of that sort of work after one... I seriously doubt that there has been enough time to factor in much of either of those numbers, the negatives and positives from the storm. The BLS has been full of shit for months, if not longer, but especially full of it lately. Besides...hasn't the Obama laser focused team's fast and agressive most awesomest response pretty much handled all the downsides yet?...That's what I heard anyway. ____________________________________________________ E-mail anytime [email protected] Inquiring about a ban?, include the IP address found here. Found this on Fox: <<< Superstorm Sandy drove the number of people seeking unemployment benefits up to a seasonally adjusted 439,000 last week, the highest level in 18 months. The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications increased by 78,000 mostly because a large number of applications were filed in states damaged by the storm. People can claim unemployment benefits if their workplaces close and they don't get paid. The storm has affected the claims data for the past two weeks and may distort reports for another two weeks, the department has said. The four-week average of applications, a less volatile number, increased to 383,750.>>> Read more: [link to www.foxnews.com] |
