I'm from Miami which is a hundred times more dangerous, crime wise. More danger of sunburn here. Crime rates in Mexico City are less than half of ANY US city. And I ain't in Mexico City. This is probably the most crime free place I've ever lived. TPTB want to keep your money for themselves, and they don't want you getting any ideas about staying down here like I did. |

How's the paperwork for being a legal? Is the process a bitch? Can you just pay off someone's uncle? What is the hours worked to cost of living ratio? Is the Spanish spoken very different from what is taught in schools? How much English speaking is there? Medical: Is is there when you need it? Car insurance... Schools... Business permits... Is the local American expat community there full of fucking morons (I find most are)? |

I have a friend that lives there. One of the owners of BRIC International. He says its awesome. Thinking of sailing there from Florida. I've got three young kids. All are blonds. Any risk to them there? |

Is the Spanish spoken very different from what is taught in schools? How much English speaking is there? Medical: Is is there when you need it? Car insurance... Schools... Business permits... Is the local American expat community there full of fucking morons (I find most are)? I'm on the internet. It's fine. Paperwork is a bureaucratic pain in the ass, just like anywhere else. Think of the DMV times ten. And yes, just like anywhere else, if you've got enough money to grease the wheels everything is easy. Hours worked to cost of living ratio is excellent, in my job anyway. You can't have a regular job here, you are not allowed to, and besides, they get paid about one dollar an hour. Yes the Spanish is different than what I was taught in school back in the eighties. Don't know if they teach Mexican now in school, they probably do, but we were taught Castillian Spanish. Sort of like British English to American English. Joke about Cancun: Know what the difference between Cancun and Miami is? More people speak English in Cancun. Medical is good, there are even medical tourists these days. Schools suck. Very good private schools, though, but cost money. Business permits, bureaucratic pain in the ass. More bribes necessary. Expat community: here there are more Canadians and Europeans than Americans. Still they are a bunch of fucking morons, yes, just like anywhere else. There are plenty of cool people too. |

All are blonds. Any risk to them there? The only real business around here (Riviera Maya) is tourism. Foreign investment is actually encouraged. You can own a business but you have to hire some Mexicans. All you've got are hotels, restaurants, dive shops. I sell timeshares, it's a big business here, but sleazy. It's the only "job" a foreigner can really have. If you've got a nice boat you could run charters. (I'm a boat guy all the way) Immigration stuff is actually easy, just a huge pain in the ass. Lots of standing in line and being told to come back in two weeks. Lots of kids around here, it's great. All that "danger" is total media hype. |
