What is the difference between a rocket and a missile?
When I read this: Rockets fired at Tel Aviv area for first time in over 20 years, I wonder the difference between the two. Is it politically correct to call them rockets these days instead of when Saddam launched missiles in the gulf war?

In this case, I think a missile means professional military weapon guided specifically to hit a target.

Rocket just means some sort of explosive projectile.

In a modern military, a missile is a self-propelled guided weapon system
An ordinary English-language usage predating guided weapons is simply any thrown object, such as items thrown at players by rowdy spectators at a sporting event.

A rocket is a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle that obtains thrust from a rocket engine.

Best and most concise description I have found is...

"They are both flying tubes with explosives, but a missile has some kind of guidance system and a rocket just flies until it hits something"

Unclear. Besides, who in Syria is firing them into Israel? The Syrian military or insurgents fighting the Syrian military? They might be home-made projectiles.
