The accident happened at about 5 p.m. in Midland during the "Hunt for Heroes" parade. A big rig that was carrying the veterans on a flat bed trailer was hit by a train. There are conflicting reports about the crossing arms. Some witnesses said the arms were not coming down as the truck approached the crossing. OP...Could you Please edit your title and add Midland Texas to the title just in case someone in the area wants to donate blood? I'm sure the wounded would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for the thread! |

He said a good friend died. "I've been through five combat tours, and this is worse than probably, getting blown up" he said. He said he didn't want to talk anymore and went up to the ballroom, where people are grieving [link to www.oaoa.com] |

justanothergranny User ID: 20609565 United States 11/15/2012 08:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The semi was carrying vets, spouses and local sponsors. No info on how many were on the flatbeds. There were 2 semi's. The first went across the tracks and supposedly slowed or stopped. The second truck was on the tracks when the crossing arms came down, and one witness reported that it hit some of the people. Within seconds, the witness said the train hit the flatbed. Witnesses estimated the train was moving at about 55 mph. I agree - anyone local who can donate blood will be helping greatly. This is a community-supported event, where spouses are treated to many fun activities while the vets are taken to a private ranch to go deer hunting...hence the name, Hunt for Heroes. Everyone here is in total shock! My prayers go out to everyone impacted by this horrible tragedy. Kudos, CowgirlK, for the info about the need for blood donations!! It's one of the most saddening things I've ever seen or heard of. The flatbed trailer carrying some of the soldiers and their wives was following another flatbed of the same across the tracks and got held up by traffic ahead. They were stranded in front of the oncoming train. Totally heartbreaking. Showofsupport.org has a list of all of the soldiers involved. |

ttown_okie User ID: 18517573 United States 11/15/2012 09:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What kind of idiots plan a parade over railroad tracks? Whats kinda of idiots sit on top of rail road tracks while a train is approaching and the arms are trying to come own and the train is blaring its horn? Darwin at work on this one. |
itsamadmadworld User ID: 27838911 United States 11/15/2012 09:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | First of all, the train company should have been notified by the organizers/coordinators of the parade, but evidently was not. Next, was there NO other route for the parade to take that did not involve crossing a train track? And how insane for a driver to pull forward onto a track, when they had to know the vehicles ahead were stopped. If they could see that traffic was not moving, then the driver should have held back - it is outrageous that someone would cross a track without knowing full well they could immediately clear it. Lastly, whomever was in charge of coordinating the parade, also failed to insure that it moved along with stalling or back-ups. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27711841 United States 11/15/2012 09:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hopes and prayers for everyone. The railroad is not at fault here. look at texas on a map. it takes a day to get across that state at 60 mph this train was going 55. if it was going 55mph it was on flat, straight rail. Please forgive me for speculating. I hope am wrong, but I am guessing parade organizers spent more time making sure the corvettes and harleys were there than having spotters and private band radios for the drivers of an unsecured precious cargo load like this. spotter tells semi driver that the train is coming, he pulls into the ditch, dumps 'em all out. they all still go to the hospital but nobody dies. Bah, back to the hopes and prayers. |
