I always check my receipts, even for small purchases like a cup of coffee; because there is so much potential for fraud and theft in those electronic transactions. I've caught a few errors that way, and also found merchandise that rung up for higher amounts than they were marked or advertised. |

Shop elsewhere instead of calling for a government intervention. Let me guess, your're a union member I'm anti-Union, myself (also anti-Corporatism) -- but it's far more practical and wiser to prosecute stores for fraud as a deterrent to that sort of organized crime, than it would be to try to find an honest place to shop. Because, nearly every merchant has at least some crooked cashiers in their employ. A lot of people choose that line of work, because they are thieves. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 18581143 11/16/2012 02:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This was emailed to me by a friend and I'm passing it along because it happened to us. Quoting: Alexander QUOTE: WITH THE CHRISTMAS SEASON COMING UP THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG!!!!! CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING ANY CASHIER'S STATION!!!!! THIS COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE. It happened at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 a month ago. I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her I didn't request a cash back & to delete it. She said I'd have to take the $40 because she couldn't delete it. I told her to call a supervisor. Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it! I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover & I wasn't paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective. (yeah, right!) Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad wasn't defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning. Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed? Just to alert everyone. My coworker went to Milford , DE Wal-Mart last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My coworker didn't look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK! My coworker called Wal-Mart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her This is a new scam. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in line. Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards! This is NOT limited to Wal-Mart, although they are the largest retailer so they have the most incidents. I am adding to this....My husband and I were in Wal-Mart North Salisbury and paying with a credit card. When my husband went to sign the credit card signer, he just happened to notice there was a $20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We didn't think anything of it until we read this email. I wonder how many "seniors" have been, or will be, "stung" by this one???? THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LOCATION!!! BEFORE LEAVING THE CASHIER'S STATION!!!!! CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE LEAVING THE STAND. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE DO JUST THAT. NOW I'LL START! PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS, KIDS, LOVED ONES shop at devilmart and you deserve what you get. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 22503387 11/16/2012 02:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is an urban legend, circulating around the internet since 2004. First of all, this is only possible at retailers that offer cash back. If you puchase with plastic from a store like American Eagle, and the cashier overcharges you, that is not pocketable. If the cashier takes cash out of the till the drawer would be thrown off and highly noticeable as most specialty stores have a float of 200 dollars or less. Second, the customer must initate cash back when its an option. This is a pre-thoughtout defense against internal shrink. There is no option on a registers till to sneak a cash back. Walmart doesnt trust their employees either. Why do you think thy have cameras monitoring straight down at their tills and hands? Please dont believe all you read online. Those cashiers work for pocket change and get emotionally battered and physically drained everyday. The last thing they need is some over paranoid, gullible prude staring them down and sniviling at them while they hold up the line and verify every item on their list, just because they believe everyone is out to steal. Of course there are dishonest folks in retail, but most of us just want to get through the day and help you--shit like this is a slap in the face to the people who keep our economy in motion. |

"Can you give us a description?" "Well, they were open carrying a pistol, had a Ron Paul cap on and said they were 'prepping'" "OK. Thanks." <click> Lets see.......I have paid cash for everything for a lot of years. Does this mean if I suddenly start using a card. I'm a terrorist also? Geez..... :kitten on fence: |

I have to deal with people that can't follow written or verbal directions everyday. I will tell them three times what button to push as they stare blankly at the screen or tell me they slid their card already. Well you didn't slide it correctly. You slid it too fast and moved your card so the machine couldn't read it correctly. People are distracted very easily these days since there is so much happening in the world today. Again: cashiers can only hit debit or credit before or after you slide your card. There is no cash back amount on our registers or our screen. You can only do that on the debit machine.. |

First of all when you are using your debit card, it's you who swipe it and choose whether or not you want cash back. If you want to spread a story, at least make up one that is believable. I shop at Walmart and I AM THE ONE SWIPING THE CARD. Like all walmarts the customer swipe their own card. You people need hobbies already. |

As for the card - the cashier at Subway slid the card and the same at Starbucks. Last Edited by Alexander on 11/23/2012 12:36 PM The truth is incontrovertible.
