Re: PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR RECEIPTS - THIS IS IMPORTANT
This was emailed to me by a friend and I'm passing it along because it happened to us.

QUOTE:

WITH THE CHRISTMAS SEASON COMING UP THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG!!!!!

CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS BEFORE LEAVING ANY CASHIER'S STATION!!!!!

THIS COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE.

It happened at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279,
10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 a month ago.

I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her I didn't request a cash back & to delete it.

She said I'd have to take the $40 because she couldn't delete it. I told her to call a supervisor.

Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it! I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover & I wasn't paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the whole order.

So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything!

The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it.

The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective. (yeah, right!)

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad wasn't defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning.

Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My coworker went to Milford , DE Wal-Mart last week.
She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn't give her a receipt.

She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her.
My coworker didn't look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK!

My coworker called Wal-Mart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her This is a new scam. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in line.

Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards!

This is NOT limited to Wal-Mart, although they are the largest retailer so they have the most incidents.

I am adding to this....My husband and I were in Wal-Mart North Salisbury and paying with a credit card. When my husband went to sign the credit card signer, he just happened to notice there was a $20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it.
We didn't think anything of it until we read this email.

I wonder how many "seniors" have been, or will be, "stung" by this one????

THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LOCATION!!!

BEFORE LEAVING THE CASHIER'S STATION!!!!!

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT

BEFORE LEAVING THE STAND. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE DO JUST THAT. NOW I'LL START!

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS, KIDS, LOVED ONES

 Quoting: Alexander

in order for the cash back option you have to run the card as a debit charge. if you run your card as a charge only then there is no option for cash back. sneaky obama voters.....

debit charges also get a fee added. I never use my card as debit.

How can they do that if you pick "credit" instead of Debit? Or is this only for credit cards?

I check my slaes slips before I leave the store. I find everytime I visit Meijer for groceries, prices always are different than the shelves. Most of the cashiers don't care enough anyway.
Good post OP.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25246760

I stand aside the check out lane used, but out of the way of the next person's transaction, and review my receipt, even if I watched everything get rung up. If a price is wrong, whether found on the instant or before leaving the store, I am more than happy to wait right there until it is corrected. If it takes the checker (or supervisor) a while to figure it out, and others are in line...oh well. So goes life. If anyone in line complains (and I do sympathize), I simply let them know the checker needs to make adjustments for incorrectly input amounts. Many then just become a bit more alert; you can see it in their eyes and faces. I am always polite and patient - for as long as need be. Some people flame. I simply am content to remain for however long it takes - no, really, as long as is necessary - pleasantly, unwaveringly there.

On one hand, society tends to discount and ignore old women. On the other hand, one does so at their peril. Age has taught patience that would make a glacier seem rash.

The customer is the one that is in charge. You must pay attention to the buttons you are pushing. The cashier can hit debit or credit button. There are no buttons for cash back or amounts on the screen for her to push. The debit machine is on the customer's side. Wake up. I deal with distracted people who don't realize what they are doing everyday. Most people can't read simple instructions anymore.

I once accidentally charged someone $115 for a meal that was $11.50. They didn't notice, and neither did I. Had they looked at their receipt, it wouldn't have taken a week to get their money back. Oops. Check your receipts.

9teen Another scam I got caught on last time I was in California was the $100 to $10 scam. I bought about $7.50 worth of goods, admittedly I wasn't paying close attention and got back about $2.50 change.

So I checked my wallet carefully and went back to complain about it. The bastard treated me like I was trying to scam him. Then he said he would check the till receipts at the end of the day and to come back tomorrow. Which I did and got my remaining $90 back...and not a word of apology.

It pays to watch out for crooks, here they come especially around the holidays. The old cash-back on the receipt when you never asked for it? No money OR change offered til you ask for it twice? Those are old tricks. And even then maybe 10 is missing or it's the old switcheroo with the folded five in the change back from a 20. Watch 'em hawkeye, and spin the carousel check all Your bags are in Your cart before leaving the cashier station. If their pal is the next in line, a bag or two of your good goodies will go in that cart instead of yours, with some extra cash in their change. Raise the red flag if someone crowds, bumps, or criticizes you for not being fast enough . Whoopi-ti-yi-yo move along little dogie. O Yeah.
