Can't "outsource" bread production since the overnight shipping costs to the retail stores would kill you ... but the plants WILL close and some of them will be stripped of equipment, others will be bought intact but the new owners will NOT hire ANY of the striking workers but will start from scratch hiring off the street people who want to WORK.

Reminds me of the idiocy of the Air Traffic Controllers back in 1981 ... most of them NEVER found a job that paid anywhere close to what they were making when they went out on strike, let alone gave them all the Federal Employee Benefits (including retirement) that they had. (and the ATC strikers were FOREVER barred from ever working for the Federal Government again ... and those in the military service serving in the Reserves etc. were kicked out!).

What a bunch of stupid idiots ... but hey it is a typical "Union Mindset"

Back in the 90's


A tire plant was struggling and in bankruptcy because of 16 million dollar lawsuit.

At the last minute the company found a new source of income , recycling used tires into "fuel pellets" for a power plant ( the rubber pellets help the coal burn cleaner)

The union immediately went on strike for higher wages ...so they missed the first delivery...the tire company had to pay the late fines in the contract

Tire company went under.


The union leaders kept claiming it was all a ploy to get them to accept lower wages, so the union STAYED ON STRIKE for 3 more years demanding a pay raise from a company
that no longer existed

I drove by them every day on the way to work, 15 to 20 people everyday holding signs.


Well after 3 years , someone bought the land

the union tried to "negotiate" with them on re-opening the plant.

the buyer informed them that he wasn't interested in making tires , he was building an ethanol refinery.

They stayed on strike protesting in front of the gate for another 2 years.

All of the equipment was sold for scrap

The "Factory" was just an empty shell

By this time they had actually built several shacks in front of the gates to keep warm in the winter.

Here's what it took to get it through their heads that they really did lose their jobs.

The bulldozers and dump trucks.

It took 3 months to completely raze and remove the building

The crowd of strikers kept slowly shrinking as the building disappeared.


Sounds too dramatic and stupid to be true..doesn't it?

Like I said , I drove by that insanity everyday for 5 years.

And this is why I made my comment on page one about bread lines and soup kitchens. Because some people are either too stupid or too stubborn to realize the truth.

The rich corporate elite choose to trade with poverty stricken and criminal governments. So it's the union that's the problem? Strong unions in our country would lead to strong unions world wide. We need a protectionist government.

The one place we CANNOT get rid of the unions -- among public employees -- is the one place they SHOULD NOT BE at all.

I'm ambivalent about these private unions. If it was a win/win for management and labor, then I see nothing wrong with the workers making more than the absolute worldwide minimum (all costs included) for their jobs. It promotes a decent life for them. And if we're all forced to the minimum, there won't be much middle class. On the other hand maybe these unions are unsustailable. As I said, I'm ambivalent.
