My Dual Charge Station for the Wii not working?

I have a Dual Charge Station charger for my wiimotes (the USB one). I haven't used the wiimotes in a long time, and they weren't on the charger so the batteries were probably dead.

After a few months I placed them back on the charger so I could play again. Now they won't charge anymore, all I see when I place them in the charger is the LED blinking red and not charging. Doesn't matter how long I have them in the charger, it doesn't charge the batteries anymore.

Did the batteries die for real? I haven't even used them that much.
