18,000 workers just lost a job Hostess just called it they will shut down

The workers tried to hang onto as much as they could 3 years ago. That's fine, I have no problem with it.

But even that deal became unprofitable for the owners after Obamacare came in. That's what just changed, and then the company "shockingly" closes altogether. Can't prove cause and effect, but it seems fairly convincing to me.

1. The workers may have had no clue, but it was the job of the union leadership and negotiators to have a clue.

2. Having filed BK before was a big clue, if the union was thick enough to need that for reference.

3. I believe it's the owners, not management, who will make the billions. Management are workers too. Their task, assigned by the owners, was to shut the operation cleanly. Line workers' task was to manufacture Twinkies as long as the company stayed open.

That's 18,000 more that will be dependent on the government titty. 18,000 more GOM... (Government-Owned-Merikuns). Hope and change run a muck.

Employees and the unions that represent them are only as greedy as the companies they work for. Win-win.

When the economy fails, so go the profits, so go the company.

Nothing is guaranteed, such is life.

If they look for a job now, they will be shocked on what poverty wages and pittance and zero pensions and health care everyone else is surviving on. They will see the real world now. (frown) And have to settle for a fraction (in another job) of even the offer they turned down.

I know a Union worker, He retired well and did great. But its just not that way anymore. theres nothing left now for the younger generations. Theres nothing left. All the jobs went to the Chinese, the Mexicans and the Illegals.

I'm not sorry for the employees, it was a very stupid time to go on strike. They should have just been glad they had a job in this economy.

the union is not the problem. Companies wanting to pay their employees minimum wage and not following OSHA and labor department guidelines, ripping their employees off, and partaking in American Corporate greed is the problem. The business owners think they can do whatever they want when they want just because they own a business and that the workers rights stop at the front door.

The unions funded a big part of Obama's reelection campaign by buying up ObamaCare waivers. Explain to me again how socialism helps workers.

I hope the facilities don't go unused for long. Yes it might lead to an increase in the price of bread. Maybe we've been paying a subsidized price for off-brand all along, subsidized by those who buy brand-name Hostess products.

But under current law, nothing stops a new entity without all those legacy labor agreements and pension obligations from buying the factories (safely shut down now), hiring workers (same ones as before or different ones) and restarting production on a 29 hour a week per worker basis, free of most or all Obamacare requirements as well.

Cant blame them, they get accustomed to the lifestyle. I saw the union workers flourish working for a major automobile plant in the USA. They bought the new cars, new homes, and had a nice middle class lifestyle with all the toys they wanted to buy. Suddenly, WHAM ! the company closed and they were left with all these bills, There were many divorces, many people had to move, sell everything. It was like a nuke destroying ones way of life...

How does one go down in life when all your accustomed to is moving up? Have sympathy, all of us would feel the same way in that position..

They did not have to work there..... Unions are the problem and they are like the mob. I don't think Unions should be able to tell Companies what to do and how to do it. They did not start it and if the workers don't like it tell them to quite crying and go find a different job.

Companies and businesses don't 'owe' their employees anything. It is not the business owners job to provide work for anyone. The business owners job is to make money, period. This whole entitlement mentality is getting really, really, old.

Those are the union workers that really hurt us.

The union workers formerly at Hostess didn't hurt me. If I didn't want to buy a Twinkie at the price, I could just buy something else. But government taxes me to pay those unionized government workers.

The workers simply want to remain lower middle to middle class.

The management wanted to increase their multimillions -- at the cost of said lower middle to middle class workers.

Hostess let the workers know if they did not return from strike by a certain date they would be forced to close all opperations.

This happens more than we know, Many companies restart with new management with little or no interruption. And many employees never miss a beat..
