Years ago when I first started listening to SQ's radio program, he made a bold assertion about why the government seems SO intent on getting people to quit smoking! After all, this is the same government that wants to ban raw milk, home gardens, vitamins...you know, anything with healthy benefits. So why are they SO concerned for your health when it comes to smoking despite their lack of concern in EVERY OTHER area? Here was the bold assertion...Smokers don't TASTE good! Should I repeat that? Did I stutter?...SMOKERS DON'T TASTE GOOD!

Don't these people understand that smoking ciggarettes kill you.... SLOWLY? It boggles my mind how individuals continue to smoking while realizing that they are slowly developing lung cancer, throat cancer, mouth cancer, you name it. It's a wretched habit. But I guess that's what addiction is....

My thought is don't these assholes have more important things to worry about.

While making smokers get a license is clearly lunacy, I believe that smoking should no longer be permitted in public places or in shared environments, like apartment buildings. Being forced to breathe second-hand smoke laden with pesticide, fungicide and herbicide residues (along with all of the other chemicals in the cancer sticks) should be outlawed. In case you smokers don't know it, the ingredients have become exponentially more toxic just over the past few years, and people who walk to get around or live in apartment buildings generally have no choice but to breathe in the poison smoke. It's not right, and frankly it makes me and many people I know sick to our stomach. Smokers should only be permitted to smoke in a house or on private property (if it's allowed).

No to smoker's license; yes to banning smoking in public.

The amounts of deaths from cigarettes are needed. It's another great form of population control that could do more harm than good if done away with.

Personal liberty can have communal or social consequences, often good, sometimes bad. If smokers want to bear the full price of their healthcare, then they should be allowed to smoke as much as they want. But smoking and relying on someone else to foot the bill for their emphysema, obstructive heart failure, cancer of the throat, tongue, esophagus or lungs is not an illustration of the concept of personal liberty (which obligates one to bear personal RESPONSIBILITY). Repeat: liberty and responsibility must be practiced together, otherwise you get, well, what you have in this country today.

Let me tell you the story of my parents. Both smoked, both died from the effects of smoking. Over the last two years of their lives, since my father was a retired air force non-commissioned officer, their medical bills of $1.5 million were paid entirely by the federal government.

There are millions more like them. Hard, heavy, take-no-prisoners smokers. And they will all end up in the same place. Hospital, grave. They will all cost us hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars each.

And we know that they will avail themselves of whatever care they can, and that they will be provided that care one way or another.

Now, since smoking is addictive, we cannot count on these people to necessarily act responsibly; after all, they are drug addicts. So if we KNOW that most of them are going to cost enormous sums of money to die; and if we know that as addicts they cannot be relied upon to act rationally or responsibly; how can we then not take SOME action to unburden society of the tremendous costs associated with their irresponsible exercise of their personal liberty?

Black market cigarettes are a 50 billion dollar a year industry and the number 10 largest black market item in the world.

Looks like the government wants to increase the black market trade because that exactly what this would do.
