Question re the Death of the Twinkie. :((
Actually, just a general union-type question, but I never understood why, in the face of massive union strikes and subsequent layoffs, cannot a corporation just re-hire a bunch of brand new, non-union employees to take their places?

It costs money to hire and train people. That is something a company, especially one that just went through a bankruptcy, can't afford to do on such a large scale. Even a healthy, profitable company can't afford to continue to pay on all the financed infrastructure while replacing an entire workforce.

Ah, yes, I see. It just seems like such a monumental waste of infrastructure to NOT hire, at least a partial workforce (and, I'm sure there would be plenty of people willing to train for a new job), and maintain the business on a small scale while trying to repair the financial end.

There is nobody left to do the training. They all walked out. The liability exposure of having to try and quickly ramp up with new, untrained workers would be prohibitive. There will be significant risk for injuries and mishaps that would cost even more money the company does not have.

So Hostess is history? That's a shame. No reorganization or anything?

They tried that. They had already declared a form of bankruptsy, but the unions just wouldn't budge and when they went on strike the company simply couldn't afford to keep going.

Since they will be selling everything off, someone else might buy out this or that product line, but Hostess as a company is done.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787
