The blaze, which Plaquemines Parish government officials say is now extinguished, was raging 20 miles off the shore of Grand Isle on a non-producing rig owned by Houston company Black Elk Energy.

Cpt. Peter Gautier of the Coast Guard said there were 28 workers on the rig at the time the fire erupted. Employees were allegedly performing "shutdown platform work," according to the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Apparently a pipe, with oil inside, ignited while being cut, Gautier said.

Careless bozos. I knew the 2.4 Billion in damages wasn't enough to either fix the last one, or to prevent it from happening again. That amount of money is pocket change to them (ie BP).

They ruin the seafood industry with those spills. I LOVE fresh oysters and all seafood, so that really ticks me off.

Wow, it looks like the world is really ending in fire!

Officials with Plaquemines Parish say work was being done on the platform which caused the explosion and fire. The fire is out and there is no oil believed to be leaking into the Gulf of Mexico.

The rig is a production facility. There were 28 people on the rig at the time of the explosion. Eight people were involved in the incident, two are reported dead, two missing, and four were airlifted to West Jeff Medical Center.

A hospital spokesperson says the four critical burn patients will be brought to the Baton Rouge General-Mid City Burn Center. Reports say they will not be flown to Baton Rouge.

The platform was not actively producing oil and no spill was immediately sighted, the Coast Guard said. It does not appear the incident could lead to a major environmental disaster, Coast Guard Capt. Peter Gautier said.
