Re: Had to sell my wedding ring today
Down to $50 in the account today my husband works 60 hour weeks, and was told yesterday that there will be no bonuses this year, I work 40, we have four children no credit cards and no car payments. Our house payment is quite low and live a very no frills lifestyle. Food is getting extremely expensive, holidays are here, what am I to do when I have already sold everything worth anything that own. I took the initiative and pawned my wedding band today without my husbands knowledge. I hope he will understand.

Your story makes no sense to me...

You have 2.5 full-time incomes, have no debt, live extremely cheap, and still can't make ends meet? How is this even possible?

About the only way I can get your story to compute, is if you're doing drugs, and your husband visits prostitutes 4 times a week.

I would be pissed at my wife. she would cry and i would forgive her.

like others already said..cut shit to the bone.

the whole "trick" is to
1. pay yourself first.minimum 10%
and
2. live below your income level.

if you can master the above, you will win. financial difficulties will vanish.

Sorry AC .. OP is talking the truth .. I am married with kids .. stay at home mom .. we own a business .. probably make about what her and her husband make between the business and buying and selling cars .. and we are just scraping buy ..

We bought our house outright with the savings we had .. and can't even afford to finish the remodel to move out of this $1100 dollar a month apartment .. and that is cheap for a three bedroom in a decent town ..

I am on a payment program with utilities and still pay close to 200 a month in electric .. and 100 in gas .. and at the minimum spend 200 a week on food and paper products and that is scraping buy ..

Then I have taxes, phones, to clothe my children, and much much more ..

The expense of things are out of control ..

We have consider buying a camper and parking it on our house property while we use the extra money for a remodel .. unfortunately that is against the law, and I would probably have my kids taken by the state ..

Re: Had to sell my wedding ring today
My wife and I live on $14,000 a year and we're doing fine.
Kids grown and gone. We drive a new Camry and several other vehichles and boats. We have apple trees and wildlife. We burn wood for heat and some hot water. Our only debt is our car payment. We live Rural. Urban life sucks, you have to work 24/7 just to keep up with expenses. A decent country place will provide you with everything you need to live along with the most important thing of all, peace of mind. But..be warned you will need to know HOW TO DO THINGS. Good water is the most important, if you have that your half way home. Fuel is next, 6 wooded acres will keep you warm for life, and if you're skilled you can build your own dwelling, nothing like HGTV, but those are just enslaving debt traps anyway. Be humble, be free. Peace.

I have had to sell my wedding rings several times in 30 years. Life gets hard. I'd ratrher feed my family then wear a ring. I then would work harder, SPEND less and when things got better, I would get new rings. When people would ask why my rings have changed over the years I tell thm better to change your rings then your husband. \

Re: Had to sell my wedding ring today
Ok, let me get this straight.. you work 40hrs, and your hubby works 60?

At $8hr (just throwing a figure out), that is $960wk gross? How in the H**L can you not live on that?? With no CC, no car payment? What the frick do you eat, gold plated steaks??

And if your husband works someplace that gives bonuses, that means he defintately makes more than $8hr, so this thread is complete BS.

I know a lot of people who live, raise a family of 5+, for under $500wk, and that is with $0 gov. assistance, no "bonuses," and no CC's, ,and they still afford to spend at holidays.

I don't get people noawadays.. OMG, my family could live like kings on $900wk gross.. I lived like a king on $250wk, and that was 2yrs ago..

Not everyone lives in the sticks, where houses are a nickel.

Here in L.A., $500 a week would barely get you out of high-crime areas, which is probably OP's main problem. Location. It costs money to live near decent people.

Guess we should all move to the sticks, so we won't stay awake all night due to hunger pains after paying the rent...

I should add that we both have student loan debt, pay $1200 a month in child support, and take care of one of our parents full time who has health issues. As I had said earlier we had difficulties in the past as I was out of work for some time, things piled up but we are working our way out. No I did not sell it to buy christmas presents and turkey.

Re: Had to sell my wedding ring today
If this thread is true then...A ring is a ring. A material object. The only time it is wrong to sell something material is if it was passed down from family member to family member.

The time to have discussed it with your husband was BEFORE you pawned it however. Makes me think that the OP has been negligent with the funds they have? Have you been spending money on things that are not necessary and now you are understanding how irresponsible you have been? Is that why you just pawned the ring without discussing with husband first??

You two need to sit down together and access your financial situation together. Figure out where you really (REALISTICALLY) need to cut down on expenses. You might think you need your cell service, your satellite/cable, your pet food for the 4 pets you acquired over the years, but you might realize you can do without.

As far as the ring goes...have him pawn his too. Then go to the fabric store and buy a round of gold satin ribbon. Tie a ribbon "ring" on each others ring finger each morning and make new vows to be mutually economically responsible each and every day in the future.

You know, my dad owned a jewelry store for over 40 years and I can't tell you how many people did this. The problem I have with it is not that this material item is sacrosanct, but that when you do this you are truly "buying high, and selling low". That is NO way to get ahead in life and if you do stuff like this regularly, you have no hope of getting a toe hold in life.

My dad also taught me that "poor people have poor ways". He was right and this is a perfect example bad personal finance.

Still...I hope that you recover and have many future blessing.

It still doesn't add up when you speak of your bills. The one that can't control spending should get an allowance, just like a child, because they don't know how to work with money properly. Credit cards shredded in that person's name and checks should be removed from the out of control spender.

No she isn't making sense yet. If they have student debt she doesn't say if it is private loans or federal loans. If it is federal they can consolidate..there are options..They can request a hardship deferment.

Why are they taking care of a parent who has health issues? Where are sibling help and/or Medicare?

Take EVERYTHING you have that you do NOT need and sell it. Then live like you are already living in your car or a vehicle.

If you can't legitimately afford the child support payments your husband is making for his kids right now request the payments be re-evaluated by the court. The payments are based on INCOME made by him.

I think you are just not living realistically. Pull your head out and realize you are not entitled to stuff just because you want it.

In the US getting a job is not a zero-sum game. She would only be able to get another job if a business were expanding (certainly not a guarantee in this economy). No one would "lose their job" if she and her husband were to take on second jobs.

At $8 per hour 40 hour for both would be $320 each, plus 20 hours ot for hubby at $12 per hour $240...that would total $880 per week before taxes. With deductions you should be at around $600 per week take home for both combined.

I hate to break it to you, $600 a week is nothing for a family to try and live off of. It would be hard, but not to the point of selling/pawning a wedding ring?

I agree, hubby makes about $1000 per week and wife around $600 and they're crackheads and alcoholics, lol...OR....

She's just your everyday standard issue ATTENTION WHORE, lol!

I know how you feel OP. I had a few really nice pieces that my husband bought for me almost 15 years ago. They had so much sentimental value for me.

Sold them to pay the bills, only have 1 piece left.

I sold one to buy a wood stove to heat the house for when TSHTF, the other stuff went into bills.

It's happened to alot of us. But, we still have our husbands, and I'd rather have him then the jewelry.
