I don't see how I'm saving electricity or water if I have to wash the same load of clothes 3-4 times just to get the dirt out. I did a big load and it threw the machine off balance and broke something inside costing me 100+ to fix, and the stupid thing isn't even a year old.

I work in escalations at Sears. Definitely get your set from Craigslist. You'll be happier mine cost 50 each. Yeah they don look like they belong in Batman's or Darth Vader's house, but they never ever stop.

Re: These new high efficiency washing machines SUCK MAJOR BALLS!
I have one of these washers from hell too, it is new (less than a year old.) it increases my laundry chore time by at least 50%. A mattress pad CANNOT be successfully cleaned unless one does so a minimum of 3 times (king sized.) THEN this MUST be re-fluffed/reconfigured numerous times whilst NOT trying to get it all re-dirtied swiping the floor cause its so heavy and big/bulky.
The spin cycle is so harsh that wrinkles manage to press in like there's SOME sort of conspiracy to force one to have to iron a ton more stuff. The suggested "Downey ball" is a joke! Does NOT work. Leaves splotches on dark clothes that will stain and ruin them if you don't go back and rinse out the left over mess before drying. THEN you must use dryer sheets, and that is after you shake out the clothes due to the firmly embedded creases from the spin cycle. I have a machine for supposidly big loads. All I can surmise is- the dolt who engineered this embarrassing piece of (insert your favorite words) does not do their own chores in the laundry department.
My niece has same machine and she has since started swearing like a sailor because of all the extra time necessary regarding laundry duties since using this "wonder washer"grumpy2

I work with guy who has a sideline washer/dryer repair business.
He repeatedly says how cheap everything is made and designed to just to the warranty term.
Companies acquisitions and selling product lines have become so blurred--in that a "Maytag" that once stood for long durability...no longer applies.

Planned obsolescence as they call it. There used to be a video on YT call the "The Light Bulb Conspiracy" which documents how the light bulb industry (long time ago) actual engineered a product to fail early.

They state that they are not for heavy soil.
Maybe some of the larger newer ones work better on heavy dirt.

Leave the door open a little when not using it.
I have never had any odor.

Most of the savings is in the dryer.
The clothes spin faster and are not as damp when removed.

They do save some water.

The new top loaders, even the less expensive ones with the agitator in the middle, all suck just as much. Old top loaders used to be direct drive. The new machines are all belt drive, so they don't have the same torque and anything medium to large load and nothing barely moves.

It's all a scam, anywhere you look. It's all built to break down as soon as possible.

The larger top loaders are direct drive, but then you lose the agitator and the automatic water level control oten goes out of whack just after a few months.

I have an old Admiral washer and dryer that's about 30 years old - they look like hell but still work fine ! I've only had to replace some belts and a switch relay in all of the years I've had them.
They definitely don't make them like they used to !
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24599086

hold off buying new as long as possible, because these new washers and dryers all suck. I've been reading nothing but terrible reviews on almost every brand for 2 days now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25898128

I fixed my old good washing machine with an ashtray (don't ask) and it is still holding on after 6 months.

I can't hold out forever, maybe a used machine would be best.

Pretty much all of it, the w/d, the dishwashers, the stoves, the refrigerators, the new stuff does not last.

Used some new generation laundry detergent, yeah, it lifted the stains alright, and deposited them onto a bunch of our other clothes! And, the stains won't come out. Ruined a bunch of our clothes and it stated was safe for top loaders..yeah, ok.

It all got dumped into the horse stalls and watered into the dirt, yeah, lift those stains! A total waste of money.

Good perfume for the dirt stalls for a day or so.

And,I can't find a new top loading washer basic plain jane with knobs (not electronics) that doesn't have that damn lid lock! I hate that, can't leave my clothes to soak overnight unless I CATCH it just in time, which of course I never do.

We ended up getting scabbies from my sons para at school and the HE machine doesn't use enough water to get HOT water in them, so it has made getting rid of the damn mites that much more difficult. I had to spend about 60 dollars at the laundry mat just to get the clothes washed in hot water. I will never buy a front loading washing machine again.

Many of the popular detergents have been reformulated. Try adding a little Borax (found in most supermarkets in the soaps/detergent aisle) to your load of laundry along with the detergent you normally use. This should help.

I had one that smelled. Started using Borax and no more smell. Clothes are cleaner too.

Another tip: buy commercial detergent. It still contains phosphates that actually clean clothes.

Phosphates were removed from all consumer detergents in 2011.

Mine works great. Don't overload the machine. Use he soap. Clothes come out clean and smelling great. Leave washer door open when not in use, that way no mold can grow. Very important to use 'he' liquid soap.

if they are front loaders, the front loader court case WILL be heard by the Supreme Court.

It seems they have an odor problem, possibly from mold, and many buyers are NOT happy with their clothes smelling of mold.

Good luck, OP.

it's materialism in the consumerism form. IF a new gadget or toy comes out, everyone body has to get one sooner or later. I know, because I grew up seeing this shit all the time all around me. If a neighbor got a new car, then hell the rest of the entire neighborhood would go our and get new cars or trucks. It's BS. Everyone is trying to keep up with everyone else. It's a status thing.

Sometimes the old tried and true still works even if its not fancy or the latest thing.

Honey, I saw it comin '---the whole eco appliance thing went from a good idea to a race get a little more efficiency and a little more efficiency--at a point in in the escalation it became making crap and being trapped in regulation.
I worked in eco building materials for a couple years and am a rep for products.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way. My tip is buy a front loader washer- they used less water, but buy one that's 5 to 10 years old. Screw the bells and whistles. Buy a moisture sensing dryer that matches it with a 90 minute wrinkle guard. Dont buy the ones with steam spray in the dryer IMO. You get a simalar effect IMO when you dampen a washcloth and toss it in with clothes to soften wrinkles. Ask the expert , message me anytime....

Front loader washers are best except for cleaning of heavy soils, like oil( use an old upright to do those- buy it at good will or Habitat Store).

Forget going to the Supreme Court. This is one kind of appliance where, when not in use , THE DOOR IS ALWAYS LEFT OPEN. Clean the machine with a load of BLEACH every 2 weeks. If you do this from the start it should normally not get smelly . ALWAYS LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN when not in use on all front loaders. Go ask a senior sales guys at any appliance store. Dont seek advice from the new employee..

I've got a fairly new washer, but a 30 plus y/o Maytag dryer. It is the best! Dries quickly and well and has only had one repair (which we did ourselves). Not great looking, but it's in my basement so I don't care.

Re: These new high efficiency washing machines SUCK MAJOR BALLS!
I avoid any of the consumer brands of detergent. I use Sport Wash, in the outdoors section of Wal-Mart. Nikwax makes a version, as do other companies. Rinses completely out and removes ALL odors, as it was designed for hunters to help remove odors. It also contains no UV brighteners as well, so when you use it long term, colors aren't as bright. The upside is that your clothes will last MUCH longer as it's more gentle to the fabrics even though it does an amazing job of removing stains and heavy duty funk. You get eighteen full sized loads for about 4.50, and the first time you use it you will notice the residue left behind by other detergents. Safe for synthetics like Gore-Tex and other performance fibers as well as wool and down without stripping out the oils.

Geez o'pete, I sound like a commercial for the stuff, but it's truly superior in every way to store bought detergents and works in both HE and old style washers.

It all started with this stupid George Bush NAFTA thing. All the machines are made in Mexico. It is true the washer motors are not what they were. One reason to buy older machines is quality of components had been better, and the motor survived a few years. Same with Refrigerators. Refs and Freezers a re also huge nightmares- compressors on em can fail- buy a 3 year protection agreement on all new stuff. If ya cant beat em, join em.

Remember, you need to leave the door open in the washing machines when not in use. That way no mold forms. No odor. I've had great luck with mine, but I did buy top of the line. I also make sure never to over fill the machine. Smaller loads yield cleaner clothes. Always use 'he' soap.
