What you describe happening to the sky is mentioned in Revelation, where the sky is described as rolling back as though a scroll were being opened. Scrolls are rolled from each end so that there is a cylinder on both side, sort of like bars, in the middle. You open by pulling apart the rolled up sides and flattening them with your hands.
