Yea, sorry to bust your doom bubble but a sheen doesn't take a lot of oil or a lot of time to be 2 miles long. The West Delta block is on the Western side of the mouth of th Mississippi River. Water travels rather quickly through there, so a 2 mile sheen isn't that hard to make.
As to the accidents cause, they were probably making a tie in on a line to help increase production. This is a common practice that happens everyday. The boss was probably a moran and told the workers to cut the pipe without isolation being in place. The cut should have been made with a cold cut saw anyway(Fein saw) so there would be no sparks. The wells were shut in so there would not be too much loss of oil or have the potential for problems. The line should have been bled down of any pressure before cutting as well. It is probable that the wrong line was cut due to poor communication between production and construction. Black Elk is on the low end of the oil field spectrum when it comes to having capital to be shut in for any length of time. These small companies are notorious for rushing to get a job done so they can make a buck. They don't give a rats ass when it comes to safety, just as long as it gets done fast. That attitude is what got 2 guys killed trying to earn a check to feed their families. And when its all said and done Black Elk will blame it on the workers for not using their stop work authority and identifying the job properly. Yea, after my 20 years in offshore construction I have learned 1 thing, all oil companies are the same in the end, they preach about safety but at the last minute it's "GET ER DUN" or you don't eat. So sorry that someone died but no doom just pain for the families.

No worries.. there's a 4.5-mile wide oil sheen from the old Macondo site and another platform in the same area that's been spewing an "unknown substance" for a little over 11 days.

The way things are heating up.. I have a feeling we'll all be out there before Christmas gathering it in tupperware dishes & saving it in our bathtubs.

Yet so far we've heard it was leaking, then it wasn't... oops well maybe just a little... then no, no, hang on, it's all under control...then oh wait! maybe not.
And it's gone from no oil slick to a 2 mile slick then back down to a 1/2 mile...
People have died and then been brought back to life and then died again as well.
