Ive been a smoker for 12 years. Im am so addicted it's like im in chains I just can not seem to escape from. Its like being in a trance walking off the edge of a cliff. You know you are going to die yet you keep walking closer to that edge. Not only that each time I quit I get crazy withdrawal symptoms. I get sick to my stomach for weeks, shakes, chills, dizzyness, and massive migrans. I always tell people if you have never smoked in your life please never ever start. it is the hardest thing for me to stop. That and everyone in my family smokes so the cravings are constant for me. I feel like a freaking crack head when I dont have one. Its crazy. |

I started when I was twelve for the oddest reason of all, both my parents quit at the same time with the help of acupuncture and I ended up with withdrawals. See, both my parents are chain smokers and our home was constantly filled with smoke, when we took a car trip, the both of them smoked away with the windows rolled up and three kids in the backseat. I appreciate your post...but don't be so "snobby" towards smokers...how do you feel about people who drink or watch porn or do worse things to themselves.+ As I said in the beginning of my post: Everyone has a vice. |

It is crazy how smoking is that controlling I feel bad for you all and in this generation we tell the youth don’t smoke don’t smoke they don’t listen to a darn thing anyone say not knowing once they start it is almost impossible to stop. These corporations would do anything just to make money even if that means chemically manipulating a large number of people to buy their products to just have a slow death. Man if I was you I’d rebel against them like hell man! It is better to let the world go out of control so they can see their own fate just as I did 20 years ago |

How is breathing bad for you? I understand a little bit where you are coming from because when your breathing you can take in all these toxic chemicals in the air into your lungs and stuff but it is natural breathing is natural even the animals do it even the dinosaurs did it and eating is natural too if you don't eat or breath in a given amount of time you’re going to die It is better to let the world go out of control so they can see their own fate just as I did 20 years ago |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27387426 United States 11/16/2012 02:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | First of all, I do not buy into the storyline pushed by the anti smoking proponents. Too many specifics to go into so I will just make that claim. Second of all, I have smoked for over fifty years and still am in fine health with no shortness of breath or anything else they claim is inevitable. Third, I enjoy smoking. Fourth, I am not beset by fears of this bogeyman or that bogeyman, of which I consider the whole massive anti smoking campaign to be pushing. Fifth, and in answer to your question, I guess I should not have responded to this thread as I, in fact, do not at all "know smoking is bad...". No, I have not been living under a rock all of my life, as some readers may well suppose. In fact quite the contrary. Quoting: Maury 22124600 i am curious about your smoking habits. it seems smoking affects some people and not others. i believe the large proponent of cancer is caused by sugary foods (white sugar). how much do you smoke per day? what brand? are you generally a happy person (i.e. no stress, worries). has smoking ever made you feel like crap or hurt your throat? thanks! |

The same silly question could be asked of anything. Why eat fattening cake? Why drink alcohol? Why have sex with loose women (or man-whores for the ladies)?, why sun bathe?, why skydive?, why huff gas?, forever... The point is people enjoy it, so they do it. Enjoying the act of smoking my seem strange to a non-smoker, just as eating leg hair seems strange to me, but whatever floats your boat. |

AFGW User ID: 21140569 United States 11/16/2012 02:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For my entire life, I have been surrounded by smokers...family, friends, co-workers. None of these people want to smoke anymore...someone needs to come up with a fail-proof way of quitting. I've seen people who have quit for years, only to go back when a personal crisis comes along....like the death of a loved one, divorce, etc. I've recently started rolling my own cigarettes and the tobacco you buy (in a bag) has none of the wood chips and chemicals that come in store-bought packs. I noticed that my caughing and asthma has not been as prevalent with the home-made cigs. Besides that, it costs around 83 cents per pack to roll your own. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1310760 United States 11/16/2012 02:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Smokers smoke because they are addicted. When I try to quit I get very depressed, anxious, and have trouble concentrating. I've been on the patch for 3 or 4 months now. Doing ok. I may stay on the patches indefinitely. I know it's not the best answer, but it seems to be the best for me. I loved to smoke. I only quit because I had to. It was really messing with my breathing, and I don't want to end up with emphysema/copd. I'm also sleeping a lot better now. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27829284 Canada 11/16/2012 03:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The belief is "smoking is bad for you". I do not share that belief. I know for a fact that it helps immensely with my asthma. Studies show that smokers actually outlive non-smokers, not by much but by about 1-2 years. Studies also have shown that smoking may actually help protect your lungs from radiation damage. Also helpful in prevention of alzheimers, parkinsons, and as a treatment for schizophrenia. Compare the increase in alzheimers and parkinsons before and after the global anti-smoking campaign. What is probably "bad" is the chemicals that are hidden in commercial tobacco which to this day the manufacturer's will not reveal. I don't doubt many of those chemicals and insecticides and flavouring agents are very harmful indeed. Natural tobacco is not the same as the commercial chemical laden stuff. Too many 90 year old smokers in my family for me to ever believe the bullshit put out by the anti-smoking big pharma lobbyists. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1018225 United States 11/16/2012 03:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Its like using electricity or cell phones they cause cancer. CRT monitors cause cancer. The exhaust of a car has the same chemicals as cigarettes but people still drive. Older smoke detectors have radioactive materials in them but some are still in use. The only 100% effective way to avoid cancer is to die before you get it. |

I will answer this way, disease, to me is more properly broken into two words to be more reflective of what is actually going on. dis ease that to me says not at ease. Same thing for illness, or the beingness of "ill". If you believe smoking is bad for you and will cause some sort of terrible condition than to engage in it more than likely will manifest in that manner. We all know, I assume, belief is as powerful, powerful force contained within the human psyche. Of course the matter of belief, as a general conversation, is a subject for another discussion. Case in point, the so called "fire walkers". I maintain the sole difference between terrible burns upon the soles of the feet and no burns at all is based upon the degree of "belief" in the participants as regards their walk through the flaming embers. To directly answer you, smoking has never made me feel like crap or hurt my throat and yes I am generally stress free. That, by the way, does not exempt me from having traumatic life experiences. |
