Re: [ TO SMOKERS ONLY] If you know smoking is bad for you why do you still do it?
As for the so-called addictive quality, I know too many people who just quit cold turkey to ever buy that lie, again, a lie put out by people who are trying to sell (guess what) nicotine in a much more addictive form.

It's something like 18 times harder to quit the smoking cessation products containing nicotine than it is to quit smoking. Make no mistake, the ultimate goal is to get you addicted to nicotine in that form, there's a huge amount of money to be made from that.

Also all nightshades which includes tomatoes and potatoes contain a compound like nicotine (called tomatine and solanine, different names for the same thing), so they also are "addictive" if it comes down to that. If you give up smoking you're also going to have to give up pizza, spaghetti, ketchup, salad tomatoes, and all kinds of potatoes, otherwise you might unknowingly overcompensate in looking for your "nic fix".

Considering tomatoes (tomatine) and potatoes (solanine) are pretty much the basis of "fast food", it's probably by design that tobacco (nicotine) is demonised, so people will want more "fries (and ketchup) with that" junk.

Re: [ TO SMOKERS ONLY] If you know smoking is bad for you why do you still do it?
No store-bought packs, just rolling my own, I advise all smokers who want to 'think healthy' to do the same.

Why? Because it's one step away from being too lazy to roll smokes and therefore NOT smoke as a result. lol

Nicotine does kill parasites in the body, so it's not completely useless.

People should realize it's the radioactive particles that get mixed into factory produced cigarettes (along with preservatives and other toxins) which are almost always responsible for lung cancers, not the tobacco. Native Americans would puff peace pipes and live to 100, so we know there are other factors like I described above that contribute to early deaths from smoking.

The biggest danger is in the excessive smoking of store-bought cigarettes ... where the need to smoke is increased by OTHER additives and addictive chemicals which cause those major cravings ... naturally, the excess smoking leads to a loss of lung elasticity and creates conditions like COPD, emphysema, etc.

So, I don't really inhale much any more, just like the smell of it around me. I just light up. Try that if you're looking to quit. Don't inhale, just smell it like incense (if you can control yourself - lol).

Re: [ TO SMOKERS ONLY] If you know smoking is bad for you why do you still do it?
I was a smoker, and quit immediately the moment I picked up a (quality) e-cig/personal vaporizer.

I didn't, however, quit for health benefits. I quit because I was tired of being stinky (and because vaping is so. much. fun.).

However, here was/is my mindset:

You are going to die, no matter what. There are no guarantees as to how long you'll live, what you'll die from, or how painful that death will be. None. At all. I had one grandmother who DIDN'T smoke; she died from lung cancer. One grandmother who did smoke heavily; she died at 85 in a car accident. One grandfather who smoked heavily; he died from a brain tumor (related to his military overseeing of nuclear testing during WWII and the Korean War).

I want to live my life as stress-free as possible. It was more stressful for me to try to quit (I tried several times for months at a time, and sank deeper into depression every time).

Nicotine is an antidepressant. It's also been shown to be good for the brain (though questionable for blood pressure). It's no more harmful than caffeine, though. This is scientifically proven.

The problem was that the only "delivery device" that worked for me was cigarettes (the patch gave me nightmares and the gum hurt my gums).

So I chose to be "treated" for my depression using cigarettes. And that is why.

I would rather live my life un-depressed, even if it's for a shorter amount of time, than I would want to living it in the dark place I go to without nicotine (and the reason I'm pretty sure I'm so dependent stems from my dad smoking around me since I was a newborn).

Not sure how YOU can have a problem with that.

If someone tells me I will live forever if I don't smoke, then I stop now (that is if I would want to live forever in this world). Otherwise, I can die any minute from anything so why would I worry about smoking?

Asking this question to a bunch of GLP'ers that for the most part believe the world will end soon and that we are being poisoned by TPTB is not a good idea.

You should expect that we don't care really.

Well... breathing is bad for you too... why do you still do it?

Eating is bad for you too... why do you still do it?

Using carbon based fuels is bad for you too... why do you still do it?

The list can go on forever... so drop it.. OK!?

NICOTINE FOR ALZHEIMER'S

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that has no cure yet. As research continues, doctors and patients are both hoping for a breakthrough. Now, doctors are getting close to one with an unlikely treatment.

Nicotine as an Antidepressant?

But the finding suggests that it may be possible to manipulate nicotine’s effects to safely reap its potential medical benefits, according to the researchers. As an example of the drug’s potential, they said, pharmaceutical companies already are developing compounds for treating other brain disorders by mimicking the beneficial properties of nicotine while avoiding its addictive nature.

I have smoked roughly 15 years. I always hear they don't exactly know what causes cancer so how can anyone say that smoking causes lung cancer. I have a grandpa dying of lung cancer right now and he never smoked. He was never around second hand smoke.

If you ask anyone in the medical profession what is the main cause of death, they will tell you stress.

Smoking cuts down on stress levels.

I am not going to show you the bad things about smoking or try to make you change your decision I just want to know why you would continue to smoke knowing what it can do to your lungs. It is suffering when lung cancer and all that other crap catches up with you.
 Quoting: Divinityz

"Have you got lung cancer yet," my boss joked. Although he had quit smoking shortly before that so I understood his motivation, the "joke" ceased to be funny after several dozen times and in ~2002 I decided to research the subject. Having scientific background I went exclusively after the primary sources, the original research papers, not the second and third hand tales.

While previously I didn't believe smoking was nearly as harmful as commonly stated, what I discovered completely shocked me. I sent the findings to my boss in a long email with lots of links and didn't hear his "joke" for several days. Then about a week later as I went out for a smoke, he walked out after me, pulled a pack of Camels out of his pocket saying "my wife would kill me if she found out."

Smoke of a dried tobacco leaf is a potent medicinal smoke and youth elixir, without equal among natural or synthetic substances known to humans. It was used in this role by humans for at least 8000 years, with its beneficial effects honed to perfection via feedback from couple billions life-long test subjects.

The plain tobacco leaf smoke not only does not cause cancers or any other "smoking related disease" but it is protective/therapeutic against them or their actual causes. It is precisely these protective/therapeutic effects, which are never accounted for in the (junk, non-randmized) "studies" of the antismoking "science", that are behind the observed statistical correlations between smoking and various diseases.

This was all referenced and debated in detail in various health forums triggering long, lively threads, such as "Smoking is good for you" [link to www.longecity.org] . Since it was a very long thread (cluttered with emotional outbursts by some seeking to drown the scientific facts that don't fit their brainwashing), here are the main highlights of the "debate" (no contest actually, it wasn't even close):

1. Dogs exposed to radon or radon+smoke: 5% of smoking dogs and 37% of non-smoking dogs got lung cancers. [link to www.longecity.org]

2. Massive National Cancer Institute sponsored experiments that backfired terribly, setting back the NCI's workplace smoking bans agenda for more than a decade. [link to www.longecity.org]

3. The crowning experiments (2004, 2005) of six decades of antismoking "science", the pinnacle -- again backfired badly, as they always do -- at the end, more than twice as many smoking animals alive than non-smoking ones. [link to www.longecity.org]

4. Self-medication with tobacco [link to www.longecity.org]

5. Common genes for lung cancer & smoking [link to www.longecity.org]

(Fisher suspected this to be the case in 1950s [link to www.york.ac.uk] ; he also suggested self-medication hypothesis, see page 163 [link to www.york.ac.uk] , where he compares taking cigarettes away from some poor chap to taking the walking stick from a blind man.)

6. Hazards of quitting (triggers lung cancers in animal experiments) [link to www.longecity.org]

7. Emphysema/COPD - smoking protective rather than cause [link to www.longecity.org]

8. How does antismoking "science" lie with stats (how to "prove" that -- Prozac causes depression -- using the master method of antismoking "science") [link to www.longecity.org]

9. Heart attacks from SHS myths (a 'friend saying Boo' is more "hazardous" for your heart than SHS) [link to www.longecity.org]

10. Glycotoxins/AGE in tobacco smoke -- backfires badly [link to www.longecity.org]

11. Smoking protects against cancers (reversal of values in cancer state and another common sleight of hand) + smoking vs Caloric Restrictions (and on the fundamental wrong-headedness of CR) [link to www.longecity.org]

12. More on anti-carcinogenicity of tobacco smoke and how to translate Orwellian antismoking "science" to real science [link to www.longecity.org]

13. ** why take a chance

14. Smoking and diabetes, insulin sensitivity -- another "proof" backfires [link to www.longecity.org]

15. How to prove that 'Lifting weights is harmful for muscles' - pinhole vision sleight of hand of antismoking "science" illustrated [link to www.longecity.org]

16. Oxidative stress, breast cancer, "randomizing non-randomized variables" sleight of hand -- more antismoking junk science claims turned upside-down by facts of hard science [link to www.longecity.org]

17. Can one replicate the health benefits of tobacco smoke (the short list given) using supplements and pharmaceuticals? Even if it were possible, can one do it for < $1 day (cost for a pack of roll-your-own cigarettes with natural, additive free tobacco)? [link to www.longecity.org]

18. Who knows more about biochemistry of life and its molecular engineering -- one little cell in your little toe or all the biochemists and molecular biologists in the world taken together? Is "Sickness Industry" good for your health? [link to www.longecity.org]

so, some educated smokers on here. i hear cigars are even better because the tobacco is cured in a manner that makes for basic, whereas all cigarette tobacco is cured in an acidic matter. has anyone else heard of this?

if money was no object, i'd switch to cigars and pipe tobacco. right now american spirits are the best i can do.

My pop & aunty both never smoked at all in their lives & both died of cancer, so that argument means nothing to me.

I have cut back from 20 a day to 2 a day though (thanks to e-cigs) only because I can't afford to smoke as much anymore :(

I know the consequences of smoking. I also know the consequences of technology and the enviroment. One of the most deadly aspects of smoking (Carbon Monoxide) is put in everyones lungs in ridiculous doses from petroleum fueled cars. So honestly, at this point I smoke still because I know I've been poisoned by my enviroment so fuck it.
