Type in massive solar flare Nov 16 2012. A X18 flare just erupted earth directed.

you work in a space centre, but you aren't aware of solar flares?

Heard someone in Finland saying the same, two days ago. He worked for a major telecom and said very similar to what you are saying! On a thread about Russian civilian satellites being down due to a broken "cable."

It wasn't even a flare, it was a solar prominence. A magnetic ribbon of plasma I believe that got blasted off

I'm not sure if there is ship to ship relay like iridium, but all my calls terminate in the UK so it would stand to reason that the others in the fleet (Inmarsat) are alive as well. Also the uplink depends on GPS constellation for spot beam selection.. That worked fine too also tried uplink to BGAN over same bird, strong signal and no problems.

do commercial sattellites have detectors onboard for things like unusually high electron/ion count, or do operators rely on public data?

XM weather and radio :ok
Shortwave WWCR :ok
FTA: ok

Certainly ONE of those systems or their dependencies would be affected..

That's a GOOD question, I have no idea.

One would assume a scintillation counter or similar instrument could be easily fitted to the bird and be given a downlink channel in telemetry... Perhaps even interference experienced by the main mission antennas could be sensed as well.. But to be honest, I don't know.. Have to askrockon

Leonid meteor showers tonight, perhaps they are moving stuff around, like the space station?
I do not know if that is an option but it could explain some things today.

From spaceweather.com: "The blast hurled a CME into space, but the cloud does not appear to be heading for Earth." ...

And btw, when a flare happen, you don't feel the effect on earth (or his orbit) right away, it take hours or days.

I also call bs on this thread, maybe you have one or two satellites not working at full potential but all others are fine
