Inmarsat-4 F3 covering the Americas is up, just made a call over it... No problems.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27643028 I'm not sure if there is ship to ship relay like iridium, but all my calls terminate in the UK so it would stand to reason that the others in the fleet (Inmarsat) are alive as well. Also the uplink depends on GPS constellation for spot beam selection.. That worked fine too also tried uplink to BGAN over same bird, strong signal and no problems. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27643028 do commercial sattellites have detectors onboard for things like unusually high electron/ion count, or do operators rely on public data? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15782258 That's a GOOD question, I have no idea. One would assume a scintillation counter or similar instrument could be easily fitted to the bird and be given a downlink channel in telemetry... Perhaps even interference experienced by the main mission antennas could be sensed as well.. But to be honest, I don't know.. Have to ask
