Hostess was such a lesson for me today. For weeks I've been looking at headlines about Hostess closing down, how it was the end of the line for Hostess, Blah, blah blah, right. I preach constantly about normalcy bias, and how many fail to see what is actually taking place, do to pure mathematics.

In the blink of an eye, Hostess was gone, still I sat here, not really even comprehending the gravity of the situation. No more hostess on the shelf, none, notta nothing, gone, vacant. By the time I reached my ah-ha moment, got off my ass and went down to the store, everything was gone, completely cleared out. Sitting there looking at an empty shelf as if there had to be some kind of mistake, they must have more in the back, someone is holding out. This story was about a nutritionally valueless junk food that would have been bad for me anyway, one that I hardly ever ate, and one that I really honestly didn't even want.

What if it wasn't just one little cubicle of space on a shelf in a grocery store full of groceries, what if it was something that people actually needed to survive, instead of a fad junk food. What if it was no longer for monetary gain of selling it on ebay to the weak minded for profit, but what if it meant looking into the eyes of a loved one while you both starved to death.

I always thought as of late, that I could go out and stock up at the last minute, but I think you fail to realize how fast humans can strip a store shelf clean like Pirahnas in a feeding frenzy. I've witnessed it with chips during a football game, I've witnessed it with my favorite popular coffee, I've seen and heard reports of it happening in other places like Katrina, or New Jersey during hurricane Sandy.

I figured out today, that the last minute strategy whenever you get in between humans and the possibility of starving is dangerous, and foolish. For one you don't know if anything will be left by the time you figure it out, no matter how informed you are. What if your wife says, "let's get away for the weekend", and you come home to figure it out one day too late. What if you get there, and there is a mob and you don't make it out of the store with your very life.

Normalcy bias. When I flip the switch, there will always be power.
If I need food there will always be the grocery store.
If I need water, I just turn on the tap.
If I need something others will be there for me.
If I work hard, I can earn money.
Paper money will always have value.
Gold and silver will always have value.
The heat will always come on, and the air conditioner will always work.
SOcial security checks will always cash
Medicare will always take care of people
welfare will always help the poor
Foodstamps will always have value.

Hostess will always be there, always be open, and just like when I was a kid, whenever I get home from school I'll have one with a glass of milk.
