I have had all three, in fact at the moment I have a couple buff orps and a couple RIR's, but I find the older heritage farm breeds to be better chickens for survivalists and preppers. I would go with Buff Brahma's, and Welsummers and Easter eggers, and I would get a nice old English fighting rooster to breed over them so that you get some aggression and predator evasion in the next generation. I did this, and I am in the 6th generation of my own breeding program, and they are really turning out great, they sit on eggs well, raise chicks with no incubators or brooding pens, forage away from the coop and eat less food than normal, they are also very predator savvy. |

Actually I have found them to do very well in the heat as well as cold. Snow does not bother them at all. Now if you are talking sub zero for long periods I have no experience with that climate. |

I'd brood up 25 or so and just let them go out in the woods. They're a lot like jungle fowl and will forage for nearly all their food. Let them breed, set up a deer stand, and bring home a brace of free ranged leghorns. Egg collection is like Easter morning everyday. www.TheGrainMillWF.com - Bulk foods, long term storage solutions www.CatawbaCoops.com - Unique A-Frame chicken coop plans www.CandyTwerp.com - More candy, less money! |

We are light eaters mind you!!!! [link to www.permies.com] For much more discussion...plus lists of forage plants to put in place to get many critters off of feed pellets... |

At the moment i have 22 Easter Egger hens and 6 rosters of same breed, they are ok but wanted a more balanced chicken for meat and eggs. Takes those Jerseys about 18 months before full grown so will hang onto my eggers until i can bring in new babes from Jersey type. |
