I see you are passing off my companies as your own. What a shill. Please stop this inane rouse. I got a call informing me there was a shill on GLP posing as the CEO of MY company. What you are doing is wrong of so many levels. First, I do not need this free advertising. Second, by posing it makes us look like we are shilling for free advertising, this is bad for my company. Get a life!

If you work hard you will find a real job and at last recover your esteem. According to my AP Style Book you need a good kick in the arse, and yes, that is from the UK.

Re: I won't hire people who use poor grammar. Here's why:
If you think an apostrophe was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, you will never work for me. If you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, I will not hire you. If you scatter commas into a sentence with all the discrimination of a shotgun, you might make it to the foyer before we politely escort you from the building.

Some might call my approach to grammar extreme, but I prefer Lynne Truss's more cuddly phraseology: I am a grammar "stickler." And, like Truss — author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves — I have a "zero tolerance approach" to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.

Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have "zero tolerance." She thinks that people who mix up their itses "deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave," while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job — even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.

Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a mandatory grammar test. Extenuating circumstances aside (dyslexia, English language learners, etc.), if job hopefuls can't distinguish between "to" and "too," their applications go into the bin.

I concur, there is no excuse for poor language or improper punctuation.
In school, I regularly passed all my English classes with excellent scores.
I abhor the crimes that have been committed against both, our written and spoken language.

Re: I won't hire people who use poor grammar. Here's why:
The article is by Kyle Wiens who I would assume to have German heritage, or French, perhaps.
Kyle clearly has a fair grip on the English language but has clearly missed the constant evolution factor that has caused the English language to be the most widely used language in international business for several excellent reasons.
For example, French, The French Academy restrictions have constipated the French language and expansion of their dictionary for many years, resulting in the adoption of many word of American and British lineage to describe their daily existence.
As the United States had an educational system founded from the beginning with a strong focus on Anglicizing immigrants from diverse cultures it's initial obsession with grammar and punctuation became obsessive.
The function of language is to make ones self clearly understood ?
Having been educated in the U.K. I can inform the Harvard elitist's that the British do not focus on grammar or punctuation with the anality of Americans .
Having visited many an American classroom I can honestly say that the British system of accentuating content is a far more pleasurable method of using the 'Alleged English language' than is the anal Franco-Germanic snobbery practiced in the North American system.
The British isles are a trading nation and it's language is formed from a multitude of languages, try these on for size Grasshopper, Gaelic-Celtic-Welsh,Pictish,Hebrew,Aramaic, Hebrew,Roman/Latin,Angle,Saxon,Arabic,Indian, Urdu,Dutch,French,German, Portuguese,Cantonese,Mandarin and on and on and on.
The English language, in truth has very few hard and fast rules for a purist, grammar and punctuation are, at best secondary, content is the possession of the language and 9/10th's of the lore, (That's not a typo.)
English is alive, flexible, malleable, changeable, evolutionary, revolutionary and non exclusionary.
It lives.
Kurt Vonnegut is not Bill Shakespeare who wrote little like
Jack Kerouac who had very little in common with Charles Dickens or Charlotte Bronte.
In other words, grammar is the realm of the writers of instruction manuals, as is punctuation and perhaps even spelling, for even that is flexible,(color/colour,UK/USA English,e.g.)
Ti's clay in your hand.
A Phillipino airline pilot is landing in Dusseldorf , Germany, and a Japanese air line pilot pilot is landing in Rio Di Janeiro, By international law the aircraft and landing tower must communicate in what language?
English ! Global law, the language of business.
It is alive, growing and the rules are ALWAYS subject to change, personal interpretation and understandabilty was,is and always will be the primary function of the English language.
In fact you can all most make it up as you go along and will always be on the winningest team ! (winningest, I love that one !)

i like your take on english. i tend to agree, and i hated my teachers who assumed they need to speak slowly to me just coz i can't spell, lol.
it's just that OP didn't do anything bad.
he explained his take on spelling and grammar, and obviously poor spelling is his pet peeve, and why wld that be bad.

he also did not come on a silly net forum and start teaching me how to write a post, and how many times i should reread it or inhale and exhale, and take my time, so some anal bastard wouldn't ridicule me.
i can't stand passive agressive people, they are the worst kind of bullies.

but, (yes, i am starting my sentece with but, lol), i totally get what you mean, while blake or coldrige were considered "poor spellers" in their time we are still learning about them, and not their gret speller professors.
again, OP is obviously making a point in a busnines stype enviroment, not bullying people on a conspiracy forum, of all places.

Just remmember parentheses may also be nested (with one set (such as this) inside another set). This is not commonly used in formal writing [though sometimes other brackets (especially parentheses) will be used for one or more inner set of parentheses (in other words, secondary {or even tertiary} phrases can be found within the main sentence)].

I'm wondering about your previous statement: "Just remmember parentheses may also be nested (with one set (such as this) inside another set). This is not commonly used in formal writing [though sometimes other brackets (especially parentheses) will be used for one or more inner set of parentheses (in other words, secondary {or even tertiary} phrases can be found within the main sentence)]." Have you run a spell check against it?

The real point is that if someone didn't bother to learn basic language skills in their first 20 years, will that same attitude carry over into the workplace? Yes, it probably will. There will be things that have to be repeated to them or fixed over and over again.

If everybody was so prolific in grammar and spelling your company would go bust overnight.

The only reason there are jobs awaiting these grade A+ editors and transcriptionists.......is because they are given unto this totally as their core fundamental point of excellency.

So yes they are needed and should offer their skills not in a demeaning way unto those who solicit them... who have the skills they do not have or the time to do it.

I have a live in computer guru who has to ask me which months is number 6 or 8 or 9.....he can not get it the name of the months he does not get.

And he does not get it because his world is numbers, binary and Dos.

This guy is super intelligent in his learned core field..and can not drive a car or ride motorbike or a bicycle.

He can not stand to hear speech he will only allow you 2 minutes to speech then he becomes so agitated with hearing you.....he mentally blocks you out.

So I have to solicit him in 2 minute sound bytes for his help..

Because he has in his brain what I do not have nor can I get it......I just am not gifted to be able to get what he gets in any understanding.

Neither can I play any musical instrument or read music.

And I will surely ruin your entire head if you bring it to me for a hair cut or color.

We need diversity of minds that are selectively gifted to keep the flow of all things going..

I would roll over and die fast if jobs were only one job. And the requirement being that all employes be skilled, in every skill under the sun and above it.

Might as well roll up the grass and go into a hole in the ground and pull the dirt in behind you.

Add this one to the list. Got instead of have, has, had. It's become so bad that the media is doing it too.

Have you noticed that the word 'got' replaced 'have' when the police state began? Maybe if we went back to 'have', we'd have less police state and 'have' again. The brain perceives the difference and reacts accordingly.

Well, the truth is that it doesn't matter what he used incorrectly in his post. He can basically only hire people who are at or above his level of grammar.

This means that someone who is equally inept at using hypens would still be hired.

Conversly, it also means that anyone who is adept at using hyphes would also likely be hired.

In this case, he could be hiring people with intelligence superior to his and may eventually destroy him.
