Good! I wish more people gave two shits about speaking and writing proper English. (not necessarily on forums or in text messages, as most of us tend to type quickly and write very informally, which is just fine in this setting!)

Good grammar is essential in any formal writing (resume, anything relating to employment or advancement, anything scholarly, to be publishes, etc.) Yet so many otherwise intelligent people make themselves look stupid by constantly mixing up there/their/they're, to/too, your/you're, lose/loose, etc. I have heard highly educated, successful individuals utter the non-word "irregardless" and even heard one say "ax" instead of ask... No matter how intelligent and successful you are, nothing makes people lose respect for you quicker than speaking like ghetto trailer trash! Why has this become the norm??!

I am NOT a grammar Nazi (hell I probably made a mistake in this comment) in informal settings, but in everything but the most casual of conversations and in any important writing, there is just NO excuse for such poor grammar.

If you think an apostrophe was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, you will never work for me. If you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, I will not hire you. If you scatter commas into a sentence with all the discrimination of a shotgun, you might make it to the foyer before we politely escort you from the building.

Some might call my approach to grammar extreme, but I prefer Lynne Truss's more cuddly phraseology: I am a grammar "stickler." And, like Truss — author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves — I have a "zero tolerance approach" to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.

Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have "zero tolerance." She thinks that people who mix up their itses "deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave," while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job — even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.

Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a mandatory grammar test. Extenuating circumstances aside (dyslexia, English language learners, etc.), if job hopefuls can't distinguish between "to" and "too," their applications go into the bin.

I have a few degrees from Harvard, and could care less about people's grammar.

I wouldn't hire Kyle for anything, let alone make him CEO of a retarded company that's been spoon fed.

Re: I won't hire people who use poor grammar. Here's why:
The article is by Kyle Wiens who I would assume to have German heritage, or French, perhaps.
Kyle clearly has a fair grip on the English language but has clearly missed the constant evolution factor that has caused the English language to be the most widely used language in international business for several excellent reasons.
For example, French, The French Academy restrictions have constipated the French language and expansion of their dictionary for many years, resulting in the adoption of many word of American and British lineage to describe their daily existence.
As the United States had an educational system founded from the beginning with a strong focus on Anglicizing immigrants from diverse cultures it's initial obsession with grammar and punctuation became obsessive.
The function of language is to make ones self clearly understood ?
Having been educated in the U.K. I can inform the Harvard elitist's that the British do not focus on grammar or punctuation with the anality of Americans .
Having visited many an American classroom I can honestly say that the British system of accentuating content is a far more pleasurable method of using the 'Alleged English language' than is the anal Franco-Germanic snobbery practiced in the North American system.
The British isles are a trading nation and it's language is formed from a multitude of languages, try these on for size Grasshopper, Gaelic-Celtic-Welsh,Pictish,Hebrew,Aramaic, Hebrew,Roman/Latin,Angle,Saxon,Arabic,Indian, Urdu,Dutch,French,German, Portuguese,Cantonese,Mandarin and on and on and on.
The English language, in truth has very few hard and fast rules for a purist, grammar and punctuation are, at best secondary, content is the possession of the language and 9/10th's of the lore, (That's not a typo.)
English is alive, flexible, malleable, changeable, evolutionary, revolutionary and non exclusionary.
It lives.
Kurt Vonnegut is not Bill Shakespeare who wrote little like
Jack Kerouac who had very little in common with Charles Dickens or Charlotte Bronte.
In other words, grammar is the realm of the writers of instruction manuals, as is punctuation and perhaps even spelling, for even that is flexible,(color/colour,UK/USA English,e.g.)
Ti's clay in your hand.
A Phillipino airline pilot is landing in Dusseldorf , Germany, and a Japanese air line pilot pilot is landing in Rio Di Janeiro, By international law the aircraft and landing tower must communicate in what language?
English ! Global law, the language of business.
It is alive, growing and the rules are ALWAYS subject to change, personal interpretation and understandabilty was,is and always will be the primary function of the English language.
In fact you can all most make it up as you go along and will always be on the winningest team ! (winningest, I love that one !)

oops2

well fair enough, at least you are being charming about it.
(i'm one of those people who could enver work for you)

i have something with my brain, i can't learn spelling, or writing.
some poeple think it's dyslexia, some just say i'm lazy, coz it doesn't happen in my first language.

only it does, but since it's a different type of grammar -in my first languge it's not as visible, as in english.

i tried for years to learn to spell, but the best i can do is tone my impairment down, when at work, or when studying in english settings.

spelcheck is one of my favourite inventions of the last century, lol.

i also have to learn how to write an essay every time i have to write one, or teach someone to write one, i've done this a few times now, and i still couldn't write an essay without learning it again.

it's heard to explain why, actually nobody understands they just think i'm lazy, lol, maybe i am, but nobody's this lazy.

anyway, will keep the post short, so you wouldn't have to gauge your eyes out at the site of my spelling.

eyebat

just out of curiosity what is it that you do?

in the UK or USA?

just curious.

The alpha dog brain syndrome and its secret rage feast.

1. The florist owner selects how best to deal with the customer sending a live cactus for mothers day.

Choice of owner is buried in an unmarked grave.

Florist is to stupid or arrogant to keep their loathation to them selves.

15 year customer of huge family in local community is informed of the owner's conspiracy.

Customer drops using the family florist of choice and the family black balls it.

Eventually an employe at the shop turns in reason for unemployment was:
Being told they would be hacked up on the spot for placing black ribbons into any wedding arrangements, even on customers demand.

Many more in the community are informed of this and things get broader and more separated from the florist.

Then finally the day of reckoning appears. The florist dies and the casket spray is filled with black ribbon streamers. Written out in metallic lettering on the streamers is every word the florist hostilely yielded.

Every abused customer and employees had the spray placed on a stand in the town square.

Many passed by laughing others spitting on it and then some saying halleluiah.

Cause of death for perverted brain florist was?
Struck by lightening while trying to remove grave marker, of once served customer who loved black roses and ribbons.

And the ghost danced on its own grave.

I think there for I am. I am whether right or wrong this makes no difference to death.
The other I ams make the difference whether I know I am wrong or right. They even make the difference whether I know I was that I am or not. Those other I ams actually testify for or against my course and standing post death.

Do you not know that we will judge angels?

I am cast lots on for my death and disgrace because I am illiterate. I am a dancing ghost.

I love being simple its fun, and it gives the writer and chief a job I need him for.

I actually woke up out a dream a few minutes ago. In the dream some black ball was smuggly eating others up.
Claiming they needed to come to the understanding of them was not thou. Then I thought why doest thee have a wild hair for them thou eye ballest to death.

I actually dream this kind of crap continuously. I think it has to do with my environment.

of course you are intitled to your own opinion, or pat peeevs.
i don't think a person is grammar nazi if they reviel to me that my writing annoys them, once and as purely informative bit of facts about them, or me.

i only consider nazi behaviour if a person tried to ridicule me in a patronizing, passive aggressive way.

if i can't write i can read, and i know i'm spelling like a kid, don't you think i could fix it fi i could.

i don't have spelling check on this computer even if i would be willing, which i'm not, for the sake of avoiding ridicule - to copy paste every post i make into word, check it and copy paste it back, which was the only way to do it back when this computer was working, coz it's an old, old desktop comp.

i just wanted to say, with all do respect to your opinion, i would never pass up on a new friend cause they sound "ghetto", or "trailer trash" it's not something we choose, where we are born, we just get born there, and also there is a theory that says that the more educated you are, or well read, the les spelling misteks bother you, since you tend to read them as corectly written even if they aren't.

first part is just me, i am not annoyed by coloqial languge, or sleng, i find it charming and it's a normal part of every language.

also illiterate people can be very smart people, and i'm not annoyed if someone speaks like they can't write.

second part i learned in school from a linguist, so it's not my opinion, just something people who dabble in psycholinguistics have discovered, or think they have discovered.

again, i do not mind hearing that i cant spell, i know that already, and i don't call people nazis if it annoys them, only if they very passiv agressivly try to make me feel like crap coz i happen not to be perfect or have a computer that works properly.

and if you are going to make fun of someone, do your research, don't make fun of a poor speller who also happens to have more linguistics knowlidge than you, coz you just can't get to them, you only manage to come off as bitter and mean.

i guess it all comes down to intentions, although they also say "road to hell is paved with good intentions", but i still prefer people with good intentions, even if they end up hurting me, than people who start off mean to me, and then complain i gave them a taste of their own medicine.
