I like my 38 revolver but it only holds a few. So I really like the Glock 17 with lots of mags. Easy to hold...for arthritis.
I have a pump 20 with a selection of slugs and large buckshot so I won't have to aim well. My favorite.
Of course a 22 browning hand gun and browning 22 semi auto. The shells are cheaper and you can practice for less waste of the larger shells.
Be sure to get hollow points so any shots that take...well, they won't suffer as long... I like my 223 for longer range.

Bigger guns have more expensive ammo and are harder to handle. Something you can use fast and easy is the best choice. IMO
