First time gun buyer/owner - suggestions??

I dont think civilians can purchase those unless they have a semi-auto only version. But youre right, that gun is a beast.

Just do some research first don't annoy your local gun shop with noob questions. You can try before you buy at a rental range.

Look at youtube and search for the popular gun channels gunwebsites, hickock45, thehossusmc, etc. And you'll learn a lot.

once you have zeroed in an a couple of prospective weapons stop by your local shooting range. odds are they will have the handgun you are interested in available for rent. try before you buy is a good way to find out if it suits you. can you master the weapon's battery of arms? do you have the hand/arm strength required to operate the slide to chamber a round or clear a jam?

keep in mind that having the most high tech wiz bang weapon with all the bells and whistles is not the most important aspect of home defense. training, tactics and techniques paired with a basic handgun will get you through a bad situation.

i just seen this ,but i would trade my black matte Remington model 700 in 270 and my stainless steel 10-22 with banana clips and my single shot 12 gauge for 1 of those babies in a heartbeat...my Beretta 9 mm kinda got confiscated by the police,..but I'm feeling much better now,lol..

I agree; but he makes it sound like there is so much more to look forward to after the revolver. There isn't. I have a .38 sitting in my closet collecting dust. I am happy I have it there and hope it will never be needed.

Too many lightweights in here. Jeez. I've been doing this gun thing for a long time. I have many guns and have done more research than 99.9% of your sheople repliers. No, really, they're feeding you mostly BS.

Here is the straight and skinny:

You need 4 guns.

Shotgun - Pump - $200
Large Bore Pistol - 357mag / 9mm / 40 S&W / 45 ACP - $400
Semi Auto Rifle - AK / AR / Mini 14 / M1A / M1 Carbine - $600
22 Rifle - $250

If you drop one, drop the 22 rifle.
If you drop two, drop the 22 rifle and the semi auto rifle.

Get a good pump shotgun, preferably that will hold at least 5 in the tube and one in the chamber. This serves as good castle protection. Use larger bird shot - #2 and #4s. At less than 30ft the shotgun is basically like a super large rifle. The #2s then give you a little more range (out to 50yds).

Get a good quality large bore pistol. I recommend a 357 magnum revolver with a 6" barrel. They shoot fairly accurately and they have a lot of power. YOu can use lower power 38 special loads for lower power applications. If you really want to rock and roll, you can getyourself a 44 magnum. Turning one loose will make whoever is attacking you piss their pants and deaf. Tons of choices here. From lots of rounds to real power (like the 44 mag).

For longer range protection, a good hi-powered, semi-auto rifle will do good things. Works as secondary castle protection, too, with the right ammo.

A 22 rifle will give you the ability to hunt and control pests. With the right ammo, you can shoot, virtually undetected (cb caps) or, with regular rounds you can take down even deer with well placed shots. (Don't argue with me! I've done it!!!)

Just remember: If you can't protect it, you don't own it.

Well gonna have to say a lot of posters have it right. However being a new shooter and owner start with the basics. Most folks that know their guns started with a bolt action to learn ie.. .22. bolts are more accurate than a semi with a knowlegable shooter behind them. AKs and ARs are great if you know how to use them. The same goes for pistols. Semi vs. revolver you have to know what the strengths and weakness of each weapon, but most importantly the ability to use them effectively. Don't worry about hunting or self defense just get a gun and practice practice and shoot some more. really doesn't matter what it is. you can kill anything with a .22 lr/mag just as you can with a .50. but without the practice and training a .50 is useless just as a .22 is useless without the basics. Most believe that they have to have a 12 ga and 5.56 or ak and .45. I beg the differ on that. they are all great weapons but in the hands of a noob might as well have a bb/pellet gun and the reason why is more accuracy. Go to a gun shop and feel the different guns with your own hands and see what fits for you. As a noob you don't start out with a .50 barret or .454 casull. Basics basics and practice practice practice with a small caliber firearm. That is where it is at. Any class you can take is a advantage in itself. Good luck with your purchase. I'll take my .22 pistol, .410 and .243 any day over anything else that I own.

If you're looking for a end if the world defense gun, you need a high capacity 9mm or 40 cal handgun AND an AR15 or AK47. You need the handgun to fight to get to your rifle. If you're looking for something just for home defense, it's different. Take some handgun classes. It will improve you so much.... Even if its a $400 dollar class... It could save your life in a defense situation.

I'm not sure why, but nobody has given a lot of attention to what to look for in buying a gun. By the way, the most versatile gun I've ever owned was a Stevens model 270 20-gauge with a rifled barrel.

- Make sure any gun you pick up to look at "comes up" well. What this means is when you raise it to your shoulder it goes into place as smoothly as possible and fits tight against your shoulder. Different weapons come up differently and fit every person according to their body. You want one the feels like it was made for you, and this is one of the most important parts of that experience.

- Balance should also feel right. You're going to have a hard time finding a gun that fits both you and your husband since you're going to be bridging your gun at different places along the rest. At 5'4" you don't have long arms and the gun that fits your husband will feel very heavy on your arm and tend to dip in the front. 22's are pretty versatile in this aspect, but a 22 bullet is pretty small and unforgiving in aim. You have to hit very close to the mark.

- You live in a loction, northern Vermont, where you probably don't have long flat areas to shoot in. You would do well to forego a scope altogether, they're more trouble than they're worth in the woods or in hilly country. Also in this respect, a shotgun would serve as well as a rifle for hunting, particularly with short range shooting. The disadvantage to shotguns shooting slugs is that they are very loud and if you don't want to be located, well, that's not an option.

- IMPORTANT - Don't ever point a gun at anything or anyone you don't intend to kill, loaded or not. Get this through your head and don't even pick up a gun without this firmly in your head. Guns are weapons. Guns are not forgiving. Guns kill. As one poster has said, safety is most important. Once that bullet leaves the chamber there's no calling it back.

- Handguns are good for indoor use, or close range outdoor use, and are fairly useless for hunting. Handguns are made for killing people and should be viewed in this light.

- Guns that are registered are known to exist by law enforcement. They are your responsibility, even when stolen, especially if not reported stolen, and, as they should be stored in out-of-the-way places, they can sometimes be stolen without anyone noticing they're gone. Be extra mindful of where they are stored.

- Ammunition must be stored in clean, dry, storage. The larger the bore on the weapon, the larger the space the ammunition will need. (Ammunition should not be stored in the same place as the weapon.)

- Each state has different gun laws. Familiarize yourself with Vermont's particular variation.

- Consider getting a reloader for your shells. If you have the capability of loading your own rounds you won't have to rely on ammunition being available in stores so much, and you will have better control over the quality of each round. Some cheaper shells are not made to be straight shooters and can affect your aim.

- As said before - practice, practice, practice. You should also recognize that shooting at a gun range is good, but not very practical for moving targets. Shooting skeet helps, but isn't really reliable for use on animals that don't run in a straight line. Hunting pigeons can help to hone this down after you get use to the feel of the weapon.

- Study, I mean really study, your gun. Know it's capabilities and limitations. Know what ammunition is available and for what purpose. For instance, shotguns have several types of shell variations, as listed in a previous post, for a variety of applications, from small bird and squirrel hunting to big game hunting.

- Cleaning is very important, so you'll need a gun cleaning kit that fits your particular gun. Get extra cleaning pads as they tend not to go too far. You'll also need to know how to dismantle your gun and put it back together, so get whatever you need for this.

- Realize that, once you kill an animal, you need to clean it. That's a whole new ball game. Skinning, sawing bones, gutting, selecting cuts, and keeping dogs (or other animals) away from your kill. You need a good knife to go along with your gun, and, in the case of large game, some way to drag it and hang it. (Do not carry large game out of the woods. You could get shot.)

i would take almost any other .22 before the ruger 10/22. of course i dont wanna dress my .22 up as a faggy little wanna be AR sooooooo.

the ruger 10/22 is a sub standard POS really, especially for the $200+++ price tag.

the ONLY thing it has going for it, and why it is so popular, is because of the tacti-queer accessories they make for it. 50 round mags and AR looking furniture.

off the shelf, its less accurate than many other rifles, you have to sink several hundred dollars into one to make it a nail driver.

the marlin model 60 is MORE accurate, MORE dependable, and CHEAPER by nearly $100.

hell i'd buy 3 mossberg plinkster .22's for the price of 1 ruger and the plinkster is a better gun off the shelf!
