"The exact reason for the closure remains unclear. Late Wednesday afternoon, Malmstrom Air Force Base’s Public Affairs Office released the following statement:

“While performing routine maintenance in a Launch Facility northwest of Lewistown at approximately 1 p.m., Malmstrom personnel detected abnormal instrument readings. We are working to ensure the safety and security of the people in the area is maintained during this response. At this time we only know that we have picked up abnormal readings and actions being currently taken are only a precaution.

“Safety of the community and base personnel is our number one concern. If there is a suspected/actual leak, we will inform the community and base populace of what measures need to be taken to ensure their safety.”

There is a missile silo northeast of Lewistown which is now deactivated. A buddy of mine lives in Lewistown, and we saw the site and checked it out. A doublewide mobile home was across the road, and the owners came over to talk to us.

Turns out the owner's brother bought the missile site after is was deactivated. He was planning on using it as an underground storage but it leaked. They let us in to the silo, and we went down, down, down the metal stairs. Everything else was stripped out. It was cold, dank and musty.

There is more than one. They are all over the place in that area. You see nothing but prairie for miles then all the sudden you see a fenced off area with razor wire around the top and motion sensors all over the place. I commute through the Judith Gap frequently. Not all of them have been deactivated...but as far as I am concerned, I'll be one of the first to know if MAD is occurring, since I'll to see them leave the state. That's when I'll kick back and watch to show! If that don't get me I always have Yellowstone lurking over my shoulder...that shock wave will take less than a minute to reach me.

This may or may not be related, but not much more than a month ago, (I live in Great Falls) but so I saw a semi trailer going thru town heading west, and it was some kind of secret military transport. It had the hum-vees both fore and aft with the gun turrets on top, and flanked by military police jeeps.

I'd almost say it was protected better than when Bush came to town years ago.

Also, what *IS* related, is that I listen to the Ground Zero radio show, broadcast out of Portland Oregon. Its much like the Art Bell (and/or Coast to Coast AM) show is. Anyway. A caller into the show the other night said that Malmstrom is on some kind of alert status, in that their emergency crews are on standby. Not sure what that means, but I'm sure something is up.

I grew up in Great Falls and the surrounding area. I've seen those trucks before. It's hard to say what they are hauling but they always have a military escort of some kind. Being on alert is concerning, the two main operations at Malmstrom are Red Horse and the Minuteman Missiles.

The Red Horse are the engineers that go in and build or rebuild infrastructure, usually after we've used shock and awe to destroy the infrastructure. So if they are on alert that would probably mean we've been doing some shock and awe somewhere.

Even scarier would be if the missile squadron was on alert, they would only be on alert if their counterparts in other corners of the world were on alert and there is a concern that something is going to be launched our way. This is part of the group that would turn the ME into a glass bowl if they get the go ahead. There is also a detachment south of me at FE Warren that serve the same function...it'd be interesting to know what people in Cheyenne, WY are seeing right now around that base too.
