Re: Trying to decide on a gun / guns? Money a big factor?
Here's another idea.

Get a Marlin .22 semi auto with a scope. $150 bucks brand new. It holds 18 rounds. It's as quiet as an air rifle and can be made totally silent with an 18oz pop bottle. It'll drop a deer with the right shot. And you can get a box of 500 rounds for about $12 bucks at Wal*Marrt.

You can sell blood and afford this weapon. Perfect for everything. Especially a SHTF scenario. If you have money later then yes get a bigger caliber. But for the money, you can't go wrong with this purchase.

Stopping power is a myth. 99% of people would never get in a situation where 'stopping power' would even be needed.

Take it from a combat vet. If you're coming at me, I will stop you with a .22 all day long and ill do it from a 100 yards.

Tell that to the tens of thousands of people who
confront burglars and home invaders every year.
If I can't get to my 12 Gauge, either Dirty Harry (44mag),
or my 45 ACP is within reach.

We have several 22s, but that caliber is not what
will greet any uninvited guests to my home.

Remember when the lights go out the deer will be patrolling, trying to quarantine you to your house.

One shot with a large caliber round and the deer will look at you and charge. I'm not discounting large caliber though, just saying it might not be practical in a real world shithole.

With a .22 you can snipe four deer and the one left over wont even flinch. As long as you can shoot. There's no sound. In a tactical scenario you want stealth above all else. You think you'll go toe to toe with another armed person but in reality you will shit your panties first. The most effective fighting force on earth is the tactical sniper who remains hidden.

I shot a deer two days ago in Michigan with a 7mm from about 80 yards. It knocked the deer onto it side and instantly killed it. My ears are still ringing. And my 7mm was about $1400 dollars. The .22 would have done the same job (almost) at a fraction of the price. With the semi auto I could have put 4 rounds in it before it even jumped. Yea there'd be some tracking, but you'd still have food for a month.

A two legged deer would go down much easier.

Enjoy your shotgun when the enemy is 100 yards away. Moran.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19623226

Wow, is your memory really that short?

Your post said "99% of people would never get in a situation where 'stopping power' would even be needed."

I was giving you specific examples where stopping power would be needed: hunting medium size came and dispatching intruders in your house.

Your example is retarded. You're not going likely to be going around sniping "enemies" from 100 yards. You seem to think that the most likely scenario is a crazed PCP addict who's charging you from halfway across a football field and you just have to be able to shoot him a couple times in the neck with your pea shooter before he gets to you.

Is this what they taught you in basic training? Did they teach you to be even stupider than you were when you arrived?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27582562

First, you are replying to the wrong person. Look at the IDs genius. I was not the 99% poster.

Second, OP never stated what he wanted a gun for. Could be self defense, could be for target, could be for hunting.

A .22lr is a great gun to have in any situation. Rounds are cheap, they are accurate at long or medium range and they are quiet. You shoot someone 3 or 4 times with a .22lr and see if they get up. Why don't you take the time to understand different types of ammunition in relation to the firearm. I can shoot subsonics for quieter hunting, or i can pick up 40 grain hollowpoints for taking down animals or people. .22lr is a very light ammunition where one can easily carry 1000 rounds if needed. For all around price and firepower, you can pick up a used Ruger 10-22 for about 150 bucks or less, throw a decent scope on it and buy a few 25 round mags. For about 250 dollars I can have a semi-automatic rifle with 25 round mags and a scope, and it will certainly do the job.

I understand the .22lr isn't practical for hunting larger game, but if you needed to you can easily kill with it.

i have an XD40 subcompact for home and carry but i want to go get a 12 gauge shotgun for home too. i have a few 22 rifles but wouldnt consider using them in the home. i'd rather spray the room with shot. think i can find a decent shotgun for under $200? maybe i'll look for a used one.

If they're 100 yards away then you have all day long to fill them full of lead so your example is basically meaningless.

You make it sound like stopping power is just a buzz word with no practical value. That's ridiculous. If you intend to hunt anything bigger than domestic cat you're going to want something that can reliably stop your target on the first shot so you don't have to track a bleeding animal for miles and miles.

If a looter coming at you in your house, you're going to want to end the situation immediately. I'd choose a shotgun over your piddly .22 any day of the week.

Take it from someone who's not a moron.

.22lr and .223 are close in caliber size yes but thats it .223 travels at fucking light speed compared to .22lr and .223 is a heavier bullet by 2x. so no its not basically the same.

with a break action 12 guage you can also stock up on inserts that allow you to shoot a whole shitload of other rounds.

from .22 short all the way up to 44 mag, other shotgun sizes, and some rifle rounds.

hell, theres a video on youtube of a guy firing .50 BMG out of a single shot 12 guage just by puting a layer of tape on the case to make it fit snug. you'd think the gun would 'splode but it dont he does it a few times!

SHTF gun of the millenium.

SKS with 40 round magazine and a cheap 6X fixed scope.

Cheap ammo and rifle rig, semi-auto, defense and hunting, high volume rate of fire, easy to maintain, extremely reliable.

I started a thread like this and ended up with a Ruger 10/22 with $400+ of goodies. The theory is that .22lr ammo is largely available, but both Walmarts by me are almost completely out. I bought the last of an entire case of CCI Quiet rounds. But they have a shit ton of 12-gauge rounds falling off the shelves. I forsee an 870 or 500 in my future.

Any gun is better than no gun, unless you don't have ammo. In which case, it better look and sound scary as fuck!

This is the OP. My power went off and reset my modem and anonymous user #. Anyway, the thread is not about what I want or need, and you obviously can't or didn't read the post before you made your uninformed comment. I'm offering useful info to those that don't know about guns and that there are MANY cost effective quality firearms out there that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for to just end up with a popular name for the money.

There are firearms manufacturers outside this country that make firearms that sell worldwide and of excellent quality. I own many of these. The shotgun I suggested is the lowest priced 12 gauge quality gun you can buy new. The EAA Witness .45ACP/.22lr comes with both barrels and magazines. I own both of these and have first hand knowledge of the quality.

Furthermore, you can get interchangeable barrels and mags for the full-sized EAA Witness frame. With one full sized EAA Witness you can get kits for 9mm Luger, 9x21mm, .38 Super, .40 S&W, 10mm Auto, .45 ACP, and a new .22 LR. I chose the .45/.22lr to start. I have other CC weapons that are also superior quality, and also not costly, but that's another subject.

THAT is exactly what he said in the video. My point is, since you are too stupid to figure it out, that is NOT the way to survive a self defense scenario, as the video was supposed to represent.

If he would have said " I am going to show how fast you can reload a single shot 12 ga." I would not have an issue with it, but he did not.

No, I am not a retard, but you might be.
