The Berkey gets the particulates down to about 110-120 PPM, but the tap water is only about 150 PPM in this condo.

Had an RO unit in my last house and loved it. I bought a Krystal Pure and it was the best.

I'm using a Berkey with Black Filters and Heavy Metal Filters. I'm in a condo atm while I build my next house... it's ok. It'll do as a temporary solution.

Using an electronic particulate meter the RO water would test around 5-8 PPM (tap water around 800 PPM - very hard water). The Berkey tested around 110-120 PPM, but tap water is only around 150 PPM in this condo.

Hope that helps.

RO on its own is not good for drinking its ok for a fish tank unless you have a re-mineralization filter.
The military uses RO but then they just add minerals to it after it.

Distilled or your own urine - which is also distilled.

Either will remove inorganic minerals and salts from your body which is what you want. Replace with organic minerals from fruits and vegetables. Get a cheap (or expensive if you like) TDS meter. Pure water should read 0 ppm.

Urine has several additional benifits as it is only 95% water. Research 'urine therapy'.

Yeah, exactly. I'm also using a Brita and it gets it down about that much. Maybe 120-130. But it still leaves a bit of off-taste in the water. The Berkey filters that off-taste out.

So is the Berkey worth $300-400+ dollars? Probably not. BUT, it's MUCH better than a Brita as a back-up SHTF water filtration unit - completely stand-alone and the filters are washable (not the heavy metal ones though).

I don't buy into this nonsense one bit. We get plenty of minerals in the things we eat every day. And what we don't get from food, we should be getting from supplements.

Also, I was in the military and we used RO and distilled water every chance we got. We never had to "re-mineralize" the water.

I'm curious though what "minerals" you think need to be re-added to RO and distilled water.

*** DOCTOR #21 ***
Here is what Dr. Ron Kennedy says...

"Now as to the argument that distilled water leaches out minerals. This is true, and this is exactly what we want it to do. The minerals it leaches out are of the unusable, ionic form and we want these to leave the body rather than be deposited and cause disease. Distilled water does not leach out significant amounts of biologically available minerals because these are quickly taken up by the body on an as needed basis. If they are present in excess then they are filtered through the kidneys and this is exactly what needs to happen with all things which are in excess in the circulation. Distilled water cleanses the body through promoting healthy kidney function." ---Ron Kennedy, M.D.

I don't see the point in people being hostile. Most people in the prepper movement are reasonable folk who are looking for rational ideas to cope.

I would advise you to consider filtration on your shower heads. Your skin is the largest organ, and it's very likely that fluoride could be absorbed there during showers. Baths too. Just another consideration.

Likewise swimming pools. Fluroide is a ridiculous notion based on very bad science. Not only that, but you're getting too much from dental rinses and toothpaste too.

you're right i apoligize but the "distilled water is bad" crowd really pisses me off, as far a prep goes, who cares? all you need is a cpl drops of bleach and you can turn any tap water that has gone bad at least "drinkable",

, let it sit and evaporate for a half hour then put it through any filter you have or just drink it, fluoride be dammed.

the concern with fluoride is long term anyway it obviously does not kill you to drink it in a survival situation.

Whirlppol makes an over under RO filter that Lowes sells for 250. Mine was on sale for 199. Works well. I have a Nikken Pmag filter I use in conjunction with it sometimes.

Hey which of these three is best for the purest fluoride free water with the CHEAPEST cost? Considering the water waste of RO, power use of distiller, etc.

Are there any COUNTERTOP RO systems that work well? Im willing to pay around 400 if it's worth it. I don't want to drill a a hole on the drain pipe under the sink for an under counter RO system because i have an old copper pipe...

thanks a lot guys

I live in a heavily fluoridated county in Texas, no amount of reasoning will get the sheeple to see that its poison. Why is it necessary to fluoridate my drinking water, bath water, the lawn water etc. seems to me like someone gets kickbacks to dispose of this crap in our water supply.

Anyhoo, I tried the zero filters for awhile but they clog up quickly. I decided to have distilled water home delivered in five gallon bottles until I can buy a distiller. It was not that expensive at all. It is so worth it! My dreams have restarted, my Fibromyalgia pain has lessened, and my thoughts have bcome clearer. Pure water is not dead....its pure....and there are top doctors who advocate its use and have only been drinking distilled water themselves with no ill effect.

spring water is the best water out of any and none of you guys are mentioning it because you subscribe to FADS. you claim to go against the grain yet you latch onto some alternative grain.

hypocrites.

RO and distilled are devoid of minerals. water is a FOOD. minerals are the KEY to health.

spring water is FULL of minerals in a DELICATE balance.

RO and distilled EVEN WITH added in minerals are so out of proportion it does more harm than good!

also, spring water is connected to the earth's energy and restructures the water quality.

minerals are key. and it doesn't need a filter. drink spring water. find a well or find a brand that does it right.

For the brain mongs....

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Due to its fine membrane construction, reverse osmosis not only removes harmful contaminants that may be present in the water, it also strips many of the good, healthy minerals from the water as well. A number of peer-reviewed studies have looked at the long term health effects of drinking demineralized water.[11] However, demineralized water, can be remineralized, and this process has been done in instances when processing demineralized water for consumption. An example of this process is Dasani.[12]

wow, i posted about spring water and the TRUTH and you guys argue like little children, look at you cry and relish in your stupid ignorance.

"I also do not recommend drinking rain water. It is distilled, low in minerals and therefore "hungry" water. It has fallen through the atmosphere and picks up many contaminants that are in the air. Also, once it reaches the ground, it attracts whatever minerals happen to be in the gutters, cisterns and other collection devices. These are often toxic metals such as cadmium, lead and others."

rain water is SUB PART TO SPRING WATER. GET OVER IT.

It has been adequately demonstrated that consuming water of low mineral content has a negative effect on homeostasis mechanisms, compromising the mineral and water metabolism in the body. An increase in urine output (i.e.,increase diuresis) is associated with an increase in excretion of major intra- and extracellular ions from the body fluids, their negative balance, and changes in body water levels and functional activity of some body water management-dependent hormones.
