For the thick headed in my family who do not consider it important to have alternative heating solutions for their homes I have purchased 90% wool blankets however I have not treated them with Lanolin to increase warmth and waterproofing.

Don't forget the ball of lint.

My hood is 75 percent welfare bunch of animals that think the govt checks will never end. They will be the most shocked and then the looting begins. I wonder whether to stay to protect my home but my mind keeps telling me head for the hills. But before I leave the hood I will be taking out a few animals on my way out.

Science is important, even in the prepper community. I will give you the following samples:

1) well water. 2) fluoridated city water. 3) distilled water 4) spring water from some Nordic country. 5) room tempature water (thanks OP) 6) cold water.

I'll bet 99% of preppers have over $10,000 in guns, ammo and PMs. but less than 20% have a $0.99 bottle of concentrated lemon juice.

Disposable butane lighters always run out of gas while still striking sparks quite nicely. A five pack of Bic lighters is quite cheap at Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreens, etc.
Buy the Bics and a large sized can of old fashioned liquid lighter fluid. The Bics are a super convenient way to start a fire until their gas is gone. After that a few tiny drops of lighter fluid on a the corner of a scrap of news paper or other tender sparked by the empty lighter will give fire much quicker, safer and easier than steel wool and battery.

I mention Bic disposable lighters in particular because experience has shown me that they will strike sparks long after the butane gas is used up.

There are 2 vacant homes right beside me on my block that are for sale. Their water and power are still on for when they show the homes. When SHTF I have been planning on taking the water from their hot water heaters within hours before any other neighbor thinks to do the same.

that is pretty neat. I have a berkey light myself. If there is no running water, how are you going to fill the water bob from the tub though?

Again you need to read and listen! Your parents lived in a day and age where they were starting wood fires in the home. With fire starting tools. In other words they were not reliant on anything that would instantly disappear. Also the disasters we speak of there will be no electricity and water will be very scarce so will food. It will be nothing like the wars of the past. Gold and silver will be worth nothing. A loaf of bread will be worth more then any source of money or possessions. It only takes one nuke. There won't be just one that goes off. There will be many survivors and well as many non survivors. Think about where you live. Near an airport, any military facilities, any cities. Electrical grids, power, fuel sources even highways that a plane can land on, all targets. If your alive after it hits you will be faced with a reality to which the likes have never been seen by anyone's parents. Today people are 100% reliant on fuel and everything is taken care of for them. Most homes do not have fire places. I am merely making you think about conditions and situations that will arise and bringing up very sound points on how to survive. Again I never said anything about wandering around at all. In fact I said find a safe place to go when the SHTF away from your home. Your home will be a very unsafe place. Just something to think about.

My Indian reference you didn't get at all sir. I was merely pointing out using the Indians as a reference that you will be out numbered greatly and they will keep coming. Anything else you took from that has you way off track and your not reading or listening to reason making you one of the few unprepared non survivors. All this stuff needs to be tossed around and thought about logically and rationally if you are to be one of the few prepared ones. Otherwise you have already given up.

MORE than 50 days?!?!?!?!?! I've been meaning to ask this question ever since Israel started fighting back at their aggressors.

So HOW MANY DAYS (weeks/months/years????) are we actually preparing for? I can't imagine trying to have preparations for a year or more. I simply would have NOWHERE to store things!

What are some of you guys thinking? What are you planning/thinking will happen?

Your going to need a very special filter (ceramic)to filter out nuclear contaminated water. Katadyn sells one (pricey to say the least) filters everything though. You will also need iodine tablets to flood your liver with. The water in your water heater comes from somewhere and will most likely be from a contaminated source. While we are on water you won't be taking showers so don't forget to carry a clothes pin for your nose from the stench that will be emanating from your loved ones after a few weeks without a shower. To get by you will need 1 gallon of water per day per person. To be safe you should have 2 gallons of water per person per day store up for at least 90 days to be safe, or access to a water supply that you can treat to drink safely. In other words those of you barricaded in that home of yours that have survived the people breaking in to take what you have. You will eventually have to come out of to get supplies and food and water! Amazing isn't it! Where there is a water supply is where the like minded community people you seek will be as well as the hordes of animals.

Not shooting the like minded community people by mistake at your local watering hole will be your greatest challenge after you have been barricaded from society in your fortress for so long shooting anything that moves lol
