Where is the worst place to be in an extreme disaster where there will be no law. YOUR HOME!! That is where they will come first for food, supplies! There will be more then you can handle or stop! Just something to think about. Not saying act like a lunatic but these things must be discussed and once discussed then you can prepare and a prepared person is much more rationale in times of disaster then a non prepared person. Discuss it and prepare for it and you will sleep well at night and carry on.

Incorrect.

Your home is your community. If you surround yourself with likeminded people who aren't afraid of the dark, your chances of survival are much greater.

Your rights to use violence to defend your family extend to your property line. Anyone willing to attack you in your home will attack you anywhere thus your home is the best place for safety.

The safety of your home starts with your community. If you live in a tight community where everyone helps each other, that is as good as it gets.

Running provides little safety since all crossroads and bridges will likely have checkpoints. Anyone outside of your community should be considered a threat if they come during upheaval.

You are much better standing your ground if you can, than wandering from one bad place to a place much worse. People on the move will be targeted first.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25915094

Wrong! Again there will be more then you can stop seeking what you have. Finding a like minded community in todays America is extremely tough and for those of you who believe you will have friends. Your friends you won't be able to count on one hand. When things get bad your worst enemy will be humans outside your family. Very strong an rational friends have killed them selves off on boats out in the oceans when they had no water to drink. It happens in a matter of hours. Your false sense of security is dangerous to both you and your family. Your home will be attacked and pillaged first and they will keep coming. The Indians lost cause the white man kept coming. Your home is a very dangerous place to be. You will not have enough ammo or defense to stop them. Just something to think about.
 Quoting: Wolverine 16344097

By the way when the SHTF your rights as you know them today and people and structures to protect those rights will not be available to help you or your family. Those same people who protect your rights will be the first people through the door to remove your weapons when things are chaotic saying that it will be dangerous for anyone to have weapons. Yes they will bust your door down and take your weapons in your home just like they did after hurricane katrina, something I didn't considered to be a real disaster. There will be much worse disasters then Katrina and Sandy.

This is why I live in the great white north....we will endure, while you animals fight each other. Good luck!

Compared to what....running around from place to place? Nahh you can do that but I'll stick with what has worked since man has had conflict.

Remember the 1990's in Croatia? ...or the DC sniper? Running across one street or filling your car with gas and bang....you're dead.

I'm giving out magnesium fire starters as Christmas gifts this year. My family already knows I'm a doomer, and the firestarters were cheap.

For the thick headed in my family who do not consider it important to have alternative heating solutions for their homes I have purchased 90% wool blankets however I have not treated them with Lanolin to increase warmth and waterproofing.

My family in Europe survived many wars and I wouldn't be here if they didn't. I know for a fact that they did not run around Europe looking for safety and traveling through enemy territory.

Matter of fact, my great, great, great, great grand parent's home is still stands where it was in the 1680's.

Your Indian reference is making my point for me. Indians ran and ran from one bad situation to the next. They even haad to fight other Indians over territory everytime they moved. White men used forts and circled wagons. Who lost and why?

Science is important, even in the prepper community. I will give you the following samples:

1) well water. 2) fluoridated city water. 3) distilled water 4) spring water from some Nordic country. 5) room tempature water (thanks OP) 6) cold water.

I'll bet 99% of preppers have over $10,000 in guns, ammo and PMs. but less than 20% have a $0.99 bottle of concentrated lemon juice.

Re: Remember a water heater has average of 50 gal drinkable water.
Disposable butane lighters always run out of gas while still striking sparks quite nicely. A five pack of Bic lighters is quite cheap at Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreens, etc.
Buy the Bics and a large sized can of old fashioned liquid lighter fluid. The Bics are a super convenient way to start a fire until their gas is gone. After that a few tiny drops of lighter fluid on a the corner of a scrap of news paper or other tender sparked by the empty lighter will give fire much quicker, safer and easier than steel wool and battery.

I mention Bic disposable lighters in particular because experience has shown me that they will strike sparks long after the butane gas is used up.

There are 2 vacant homes right beside me on my block that are for sale. Their water and power are still on for when they show the homes. When SHTF I have been planning on taking the water from their hot water heaters within hours before any other neighbor thinks to do the same.

Again you need to read and listen! Your parents lived in a day and age where they were starting wood fires in the home. With fire starting tools. In other words they were not reliant on anything that would instantly disappear. Also the disasters we speak of there will be no electricity and water will be very scarce so will food. It will be nothing like the wars of the past. Gold and silver will be worth nothing. A loaf of bread will be worth more then any source of money or possessions. It only takes one nuke. There won't be just one that goes off. There will be many survivors and well as many non survivors. Think about where you live. Near an airport, any military facilities, any cities. Electrical grids, power, fuel sources even highways that a plane can land on, all targets. If your alive after it hits you will be faced with a reality to which the likes have never been seen by anyone's parents. Today people are 100% reliant on fuel and everything is taken care of for them. Most homes do not have fire places. I am merely making you think about conditions and situations that will arise and bringing up very sound points on how to survive. Again I never said anything about wandering around at all. Condoms and tampons can save your life.

If you are mobile and have no place to store water...a condom can be a lifesaver. If you put the condom into a sleeve or the leg of a panty hose, you can fill it with 2 gallons of water. Then tie a knot in the condom, and sleeve and hang from your back or shoulder.

You can also filter water through a tampon much like a straw....to drink out of mud puddles, ditches, etc...

I beg to differ, Grasshopper. Just because you are too stupid to plan ahead does not mean that those who do are dumb.

Calling you Grasshopper is not a reference to the old Kung Fu TV series. It refers to the fable of the grasshopper and the ants. There is also a fine old animated cartoon of this fable. I suspect the cartoon would be most appropriate for one your age.

Anything else you took from that has you way off track and your not reading or listening to reason making you one of the few unprepared non survivors. All this stuff needs to be tossed around and thought about logically and rationally if you are to be one of the few prepared ones. Otherwise you have already given up.

Remember the pine tree, it could save your life. The bark has nutrients and minerals in it that can keep you alive. Chew on the bark. The roots of a pine tree make great blunt weapons. A long root handle and the ball of the root. Also the pine cones have a sweet syrup in them that can be boild out and drank in the water you boiled it out with providing nutrients. Look for a pine tree if it gets that bad.

Entertaining thread. Steel wool and batteries. Water in your toilet tank and hot water heater. Chit chat for urbanites that play at prepping and think survival stuff is trendy.

The masses in urbania are so screwed if and when we have a major SHTF event. If major doom happens this winter from the events that are unfolding there won't be many that make it very far out of the big urban centres with their BOBs where I live. We already have 16 inches of snow and the cold weather is almost here.

If the doom happens over the next few months there will be a serious drop in the population in many parts of the northern hemisphere.

I suggest more water be stored as well.

MORE than 50 days?!?!?!?!?! I've been meaning to ask this question ever since Israel started fighting back at their aggressors.

So HOW MANY DAYS (weeks/months/years????) are we actually preparing for? I can't imagine trying to have preparations for a year or more. I simply would have NOWHERE to store things!

What are some of you guys thinking? What are you planning/thinking will happen?

Thanks for helping a very naive person.

Also if there is something that has happened or coming, storm etc you can fill the bathtub.
 Quoting: GaryMule

Just make sure that the bathtub will actually hold it. Most of them don't have a very good seal and the water will very slowly leak out over a period of hours.

that's why everybody needs the 'WaterBob'...

holds 100 gallons.

two bathtubs, 200 gallons.

check it out.

that is pretty neat. I have a berkey light myself. If there is no running water, how are you going to fill the water bob from the tub though?

if you have advanced notice of a hurricane coming you have the time to fill it, just depends on what is happening...

Quick question boiler tard, what you gone do when the boiler is frozen hmm?

What about metal particles contamination in thebdrinkng water?

Gonna hold your watterproof match under it?

Your going to need a very special filter (ceramic)to filter out nuclear contaminated water. Katadyn sells one (pricey to say the least) filters everything though. You will also need iodine tablets to flood your liver with. The water in your water heater comes from somewhere and will most likely be from a contaminated source. While we are on water you won't be taking showers so don't forget to carry a clothes pin for your nose from the stench that will be emanating from your loved ones after a few weeks without a shower. To get by you will need 1 gallon of water per day per person. To be safe you should have 2 gallons of water per person per day store up for at least 90 days to be safe, or access to a water supply that you can treat to drink safely. In other words those of you barricaded in that home of yours that have survived the people breaking in to take what you have. You will eventually have to come out of to get supplies and food and water! Amazing isn't it! Where there is a water supply is where the like minded community people you seek will be as well as the hordes of animals.

Not shooting the like minded community people by mistake at your local watering hole will be your greatest challenge after you have been barricaded from society in your fortress for so long shooting anything that moves lol

Correction. They will take your Twinkies and Cupcakes from you and leave you with nothing at all costs. They will come at you in numbers even if you are armed. Tks for the Cupcake Cupcake!
