Sol Neman User ID: 25567431 United States 11/17/2012 05:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am an old man who does not or has not kept up with all of the modern innovations. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16674316 I have computer service on my phone lines, but I do not have phone service. Is it possible to use the computer line to get phone service using something that sends the phone signal to the computer??? Any suggestions would be appreciated. You're referring to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) It works great as long as you have a high speed broadband connection. You should probably have at least 5 Mbps down for a connection to use this. If you are on a slower DSL (still uses a phone line) or Satellite connection in the 1.5 - 3.0 Mbps your call quality will be bad, lots of robo-voice and dropped calls. Vonage is an example of VoIP, also your cable company should have High Speed Broadband and possibly their own version of a VoIP service. Hope that helps... MarkinAZ User ID: 20006444 United States 11/17/2012 06:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | But those kinds of services do require a dial tone on your regular telephone line. If you have "DSL" (stands for Digital Subscriber Line" service this can run over an 'empty" pair of wires with no dial tone and no phone number associated with it - it it can be sent over a regular phone line. But it's always on (no dialing anyone to connect.) What you described sounds like the DSL service with no phone number or voice service associated with it. (Some telco's do offer this.) if you have DSL service - the type without a voice grade telco muber provided and charged for each month by the Telco - or the other type without a dial-tone but you are always online, then either one of them can handle a VONAGE adapter or an OOMA unit. They both do pretty much the same ting. They give you a Vice over your Internet Protocol Service. or VOIP. They work very well, are dependable and usually far cheaper than a number from the Telco which currently is about thirty dollars per month unless you're poor enough to apply for life-line service (costs as little as $3 dollars per month depending on area.) Anyway, if you currently have an always-on connection to the internet with no "dialing" to get online.then you probably have DSL service and can connect either a Vonage voice adapter to it, and then you plug your regular telephone into the Vonage Box and you have dial tone and a phone number and can call anywhere in the country or the world. WWW.VONAGE.COM is a place to start. Good luck. And I remember when there was "The Telephone Company" (only one of them) and they provided the service, the phone, the long distance, etc. At about 1/4 of the current cost of a line unless you go to VOIP. Don't feel bad about being older. I am too. But I did keep up with the tech as best I could. Kids late in life and then grandkids even later made sure of that for me! <grin> |

Do not get magic jack whatever you do. It's terrible. Also vonage is expensive, and not worth it. Skype is an option but its a bit more expensive than ooma, and much more complicated. If you don't know computers much I really would try to go with ooma over dsl, or something faster. |

You will also need a little tutoring. You could also go to YouTube and search for skype tutorials. Youtube is great for learning how to do stuff. Just this past summer I learned how to make a motormount for my canoe on youtube. Think of youtube as a video library. Another link for you to checkout on this subject: [link to www.lights.ca] |
