poor farmers.

Farmers who dont grow anything, but just deal with cattle making themselves a killing while the average person struggles to buy beef in the store.

Farmers who sit on their land their whole life and never have to get out and get a real job in the real world while their property is used for nothing when they could be growing crops and hiring hundreds of people to harvest those crops by hand.

Poor Farmers who act as if they are more entitled or better than everyone else just because they own huge chunks of land.

I'm not a farmer, but I live all around farmers. For you to indirectly say they are lazy shows how absolutely fucking stupid you are. They work their asses off.

You probably voted for Obama too.

China and Russia don't even have an estate tax any more since they found firsthand how it contributed to a wrecked economy. In 2013 it is scheduled to be back to a little over 2003 levels, it was completely abolished in 2010, but they brought it back the following year.

Being a farmer myself, the biggest concern is the rate going up to 55%. And the exemption going from 5 million to 1 million on jan.1. 25% rate and a 3.5 million exemption would be fair.

ya know, most of the farmers around here wouldnt let you so much as step foot on their property without shooting you. Thats how greedy these people are. Greedy rich people who think they are entitled to their fathers wealth.
 Quoting: NewsUpdater

Yes, I am entitled. Did you start working 12 to 16 hour days when you were 8 years old? Did you dread school letting out for Summer because you went from 2 day work weeks to 7 day? Were you ever hungry because a crop didn't make and your whole diet until next harvest was beans, potatoes and corn bread, with the occasional hamburger?
And you know why farmers don't like people like you on their property, because you sound like the type that will take a 4 wheel drive truck into a field of standing wheat and do donuts just to see how much damage you can do.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28010550

EXACTLY
people have no idea how hard a small farmer works
and how he lives
they aren't out during hurricanes, blizzards and below zero temps taking care of animals
and they aren't sweating and dehydrating working the summer
and can't afford to pay for help
either you do it yourself or it doesn't get done
very few have any clue just what that means for a farmer
i don't give a rat's ass about big ag
it's the small farmers that need to not be taxed
they're taxed on the "value" of their land and equipment
not what they actually make off it which isn't much at all
so farmers end up selling their land
but, hey, at least there will be room for more subdivisions for yuppies and walmarts for the ignorant masses
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27809652

You're right, they think that just because the land is "valuable", we make a killing. In a really good year, if we double crop, we can make $50,000, most years $35-40, some years a lot less.

The Death tax prevents families, whom do not shelter their estates, from accumulating their wealth into a formidable strength. There are many trusts that prevent the application of the death tax from being levied upon an estate.

The rich want no more rich.

Re: Ranchers, farmers brace for 'death tax' impact
Do you know why most farms are now owned by large corporations? It's because the farms don't make enough money to make land payments and still put food on the table. Mom and Pop farms are going away fast. If the farmers have to pay ridiculous taxes to inherit what they have worked for all their lives, the money comes from the bank. The bank will end up owning the farm. One more farm bites the dust. Farmers are far from rich. Most barely make ends meet in a bad year. A lot of farms depend on loans to survive a bad year. In a good year that same farmer can make enough money to pay everything off, and maybe buy a new truck, or a tractor. Does that make him rich, no it just means he can keep working his ass off for another year. Farmers work hard, and put in 60 to 80 hours a week. At harvest time or when something goes wrong, the hours can go up dramatically. Sometimes they have to eat on the go, and survive on a little nap when they can take a minute off. I don't know where these assholes get the idea that farmers are rich. If any of them want to try it, most farms are looking for help. The hours are long and the pay is not too good, but at the end of the day, you feel like you have accomplished something. With the average farmer being somewhere between 65 and eighty, this could work into a chance to inherit some land. If you are man enough, and aren't afraid of hard work, go for it. Just don't try to tell the farmer that he's rich. Even though his net worth looks really good, all his money is tied up in land and equipment.

The death tax makes it very hard to keep the farm in the family. It's just a gift to large corporate farms. That who ends up with all the land after it is repossessed.

Maybe us lazy ass farmers should go on strike for a year, you shouldn't miss us, we don't do anything except grow most of what you eat, such as beans, corn, potatoes, wheat, beef, pork and most of your vegetables. But you can live on those Mexican tomatoes and chilis, some high priced produce from Chile, and how about a little Japanese beef?

and it's not just that we'll lose the small farmers (self included as we make too little to pay hundreds of thousands in taxes on the "value" so we'd have to sell)

it's the KNOWLEDGE that will also be lost
the knowledge of when to plant, what to plant, when to cut the hay, when to harvest this or that, the seasons, the cycles, all the influences, the moon phases even
will be gone

and that's really sad
but expected given how short sighted and determined to be more retarded society has become and increasingly dependent on those who should not be trusted

The good thing is Democrats won't always be a majority in the Senate or in the White House. Things can change again. There will be some ways around the tax. Maybe incorporate and then if you're a corporation you won't be taxed as much right?
If anyone has ideas on how to get around this, please post them.

FUCK YOU

seriously

our family has farmed for generations
we don't have 50,000 acres
we have 1200 acres
and when the death tax hits we automatically have to sell HALF of it to pay the tax
because the property is valuable
yet my husband "makes" about $30,000 per year
that's it
we do have a house so no payment there
but we aren't rich
and he has worked his ass off all his life
7 days/week
many years without vacations
when it snows he's out taking care of the cows
while you're at the beach he is picking fruit
or stacking hay in the loft of the barn where it's about 120 degrees

SO YOU CAN HAVE FOOD

without farmers there is no food
do you not get that?

this will not hurt big ag
ever
this will wipe out small farmers
you know, the ones who don't poison everything
who can't "afford" to pump their meat with hormones
or give medications as SOP instead of simply as needed

PEOPLE LIKE YOU DESERVE THE POISON YOU'LL BE FED

because if this death tax is brought back
your only choices will be gmo crap and poisoned meat or growing all of your own food

Re: Ranchers, farmers brace for 'death tax' impact
It's the trasfer of property that is becoming more difficult. According to our attorney only $13,000 a year can be given as a gift and anything over that is taxed. If a trust owns it then the property can remain in the trust. Or so we thought. It turns out at death all the assets are added up by the accountants. This includes any valuables (paintings, cars, furnishings, electronic equipment, jewelry, cash still in the account, any stock, all property, etc.) and reported to the state with the final tally on the final tax return along with a copy of the death certificate. Woop-de-do! What a fricking mess this was just getting all the details and accounting together to do this. And the penalties for late filing (has to be within 9 months) was 15% on top of the 35%.

Personally, I think buying gold coins and distributing them to the kids before death is a whole lot easier as who can track that.
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.
