You can also bathe your dog then rinse with a mild solution of water and white vinegar. Fleas hate vinegar smell.... After you have rinsed the dog thoroughly with plain warm water, pour a mild vinegar rinse over it. Use about one cup of vinegar in two gallons of warm water and pour it all over the dog, don't rinse it off. It's a fast way to get the fleas off for the night til you can get to the store or order your products online. It can take months to completely get rid of fleas when using natural products. I drove myself crazy for three months using diatomaceous earth on my two cats...I also spread the DE all over the carpets then vacuumed. It lowered the number of fleas but there is always that one or two left and they start the whole damn problem all over again. I finally gave up and went to the vet and got Revolution, END OF PROBLEM. I felt like a natural fool for waiting that long and putting my cats through all that misery. Plus it just makes you feel like your house is dirty. |

And the other tips on here. I'm going to ask vet if I can try Revolution. They probably will tell me they don't have it, they only push Advantix and to a lesser degree, Frontline Plus. I too have tried the "natural" approach with a lot of different things and have been disappointed. I need help for my dog soon. Putting down any kind of powder substance to vacuum or clean up is really scary as my father is on oxygen now and almost anything can effect his breathing, including baby powder. |

Her appetite is off, every other day she eats nothing, her stomach gurgles on the days she doesn't eat. It compromised her immune system and she got a yeast infection I'm treating. I friggin HATE the stuff. Will look for holistic alternatives in the spring as I will never put it on my dog again, its POISON. I swear it killed my cat two years ago. She was never the same after I gave it to her. I haven't looked it up yet but I heard there is a sonic flea collar that will dispell fleas. Isis One |

The active ingredient (selamectin is in fact quite safe. It is related to Ivermectin which has been used to prevent Heartworm infection for many many years I worked with animal rescue for years and completely agree with the above statement on Revolution. Revolution is one of the few products which kills Harvest Mites. | ming User ID: 1458650 11/18/2012 04:08 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Frontline stopped working for my dog ages ago, he's old and has developed a skin condition that smells, flakes, and drives him mad. I found this stuff called "billy no mates', don't know how easy it would be for you to get. It's amazing! He smells nice, his skin condition is almost non-existent, his coat is really soft and shiny, and no fleas at all! Takes a while to start working but it definitely works. It's just a mix of herbs, fenugreek, neem, and a few others. It comes in either liquid or dry herbs to put on food every day, and its pretty cheap compared to other treatments. It smells kind of like a nice savoury soup. [link to www.myitchydog.co.uk] edit to add -we had a constant flea problem for over a year, which got very severe in the last 6 or 7 months until I discovered this. edit again to add - it works by making the pet unappealing to fleas and ticks rather than killing them once they're on the pet, they just don't jump on in the first place. Which stops infestations in house due to them being carried in on fur. It's bloody brilliant. (I realise I probably sound like a company rep, but it really is that good!) | Anonymous Coward User ID: 27792021 11/18/2012 04:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Flea collars are the worst and most toxic solution as they would be breathing the poison in all day long--as would you if you were in proximity of your dog's head! I have tried all sorts of natural remedies and have given up on that. Some of them may be natural, depending on a poison derived from chrysanthemums, but that does not make them any less toxic! There are various reports on Advantix, some dogs react badly to it, but then that can happen with ANY product, it really depends on the sensitivity of the particular dog--just like some people have a peanut allergy whereas most can consume peanuts with no problem. I would recommend that you try Advantix out by the following method: Only apply a partial dose and see how it goes. If the dog has no untoward reaction then apply the rest of the product the following day. You are not required to apply all the product on the back of the neck and can use the method recommended for large dogs where it is distributed in several points along the spine--this will cut the risk of any topical, dermatological sensitivity. Watch the dog carefully for the first 20 minutes or so and if he seems to be experiencing difficulties, wash the product off immediately. My dog has food allergies and a naturally pink skin and he did not have any issues with Advantix. You might be interested in this comparison of three products but bear in mind that it was published when Frontline was still considered effective: [link to www.bichonfriseusa.com] |
| Ralph--a house dog User ID: 25802009 11/18/2012 04:58 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Daily flea combing, especially if you only have one small dog, is very effective and completely safe, when done right. Quoting: Giftedest Diatomacious earth is also very safe and effective when used properly. Also, bathing them with Dawn brand dish detergent will kill adult fleas but not the eggs. Lather it up and let suds stay on for about 5 minutes or so. This only removes existing fleas; it does not keep them off. "Who decides?" ---Robert A. | Anonymous Coward User ID: 9581681 11/18/2012 05:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I use Advantage and it works pretty well. Frontline didn't really work for me and made my cat lethargic for a few days too, so won't use that again. Capstar is great at stemming the tide of fleas. You may have to spray the place by yourself or get someone to do it to fully stop the infestation. When you do that you'll want to give your pets a capstar beforehand because the fleas will flee the spray onto the pet's fur and you don't want them to be able to do that. |
