Dude, you need to lay in a supply of 500 shells plus, and go practice with it regularly. You need to know how to load and fire that gun in the dark, and keep it spic-and-span clean. Don't be an idiot that stands there with his wiener in his hand not knowing what to do when the barbarians are breaking down the door to come butcher you and your fam.

There's sporting applications for shotguns such as shooting clays and IPCC for instance.

Also people use shotguns to hunt, which isn't murder it's feeding your family.

Than naturally shotguns can be used for home defense as well.

Most people aren't tactical swat officers who kick in doors for a living so I highly doubt "murder" is any intent for the OP.

Heck check out what the most commonly used murder weapons are, they aren't firearms. May as well ban pharmaceuticals, doctors, and cars if you want to lower death rates.

my shotty is loaded with one in the chamber, always close by. Don't listen to the idiots who rack the slide to scare em off. Keep one in the chamber with the safety on. (after u get some practice with it)

"now i'm ready for anything". roflmao why do i get the idea you didn't even buy a cleaning kit? field strip it and give it a very thorough cleaning BEFORE you put a single round through it. then find somewhere you can actually fire it without putting others in peril, and go run 20 boxes or so of shells through it (not all at once, unless you relish the idea of your strong arm being crippled for a few days). tear it down and clean it after every shooting session. at that point you are "barely competent, but fairly well familiarized". when you've stopped a charging lion, or wiped a tiger off a howdah with it, then you can claim "ready for anything" status. until you become well versed in handling it, you are the proud owner of a very expensive, very dangerous club. MEMORIZE the owners manual, practice such minutiae as operating the safety, the bolt latch, how to render it safe, etc. NEVER prop it against something with a shell in the chamber. NEVER prop it against something with a shell in the chamber (yes, i put that in twice, because that's what gets more imbeciles killed by their own firearm than anything else). dont take this as being hard on you. realize you are a complete neophyte, and second guess everything you do while handling it. that's how you become not only competent, but also safe. now go enjoy your shotty, but DONT do anything incredibly stupid with it

Bought a bipod for my son's .308 yesterday...damn fine accessory for a sniper rifle...400 yards may as well be 400 feet for that gun...I swear whenever I buy him a gun that he wants I end up getting myself the same thing...
