Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23343731 What a huge waste of time money and effort smoking was, so glad it's gone from my life. The cost of smoking to society is enormouns and all that profit goes to fucking rich white pricks that DO NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU, YOUR HEALTH, AND YOUR FAMILY. There are centuries of generational wealth attached to this death industry. Smokers feel so defensive about all of this, because they feel so dumb and ripped of that they are hooked on that shit and don't have the guts to get off it. Revolutionary and rebellious smokers standing up for civil and commercial right???? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - sorry bit of emphasema from the smokes). Give me a fuckin' break. OH! The Trick to quiting must be shoving my head up my ass. Worked for you. |

It's not about supporting the corporations, but more - in the case of austalia anyway - about supporting the government through insane taxes. The same pack of cigarettes that cost $20 in australia, cost $1 in China. The same company sells them, marlboro. Where's that big differential going? Not to marlboro. Yup, it's a hidden tax. The government mandates that the price be raised, because they know Australians would freak out if they saw that they were paying a 1900% tax. |

It also won't work if the objective is to limit how many cigarettes someone smokes. All someone would have to do is get a nonsmoking friend to acquire a smoking license and buy cigs on their behalf. |

[link to www.economist.com] Quoting: smilesun More insanity. I don't really see how this would reduce smoking. People don't buy cigarettes because of what the packaging looks like. The tobacco companies do have a point that this is an expropriation of intellectual property. It will be interesting to see what the World Trade Organization has to say about that. |

I am the new age Leper. Your job my friend is to market a wraparound sticker in the old format look without infringing on copyrights. Sell em right next to the cigs. Quoting: Cho Zen Should we ban smoking everywhere? Yes, we should ban smoking or No, we should not ban smoking. ... Smoking only harms those who choose to stay around it, if you dont like it, dont walk near it. ... Holland has cannabis legal, and it has one of the lowest usages in the world. The government mandates that the price be raised, because they know Australians would freak out if they saw that they were paying a 1900% tax. In the U.S. prices vary state to state, sometimes even city to city. The federal government puts a big tax on cigarettes, then sates get in on the act, and some local municipalities [like NYC] can add their own additional sales tax. I live in Massachusetts [Boston] and a pack of generic cigarettes or a no-name brand cost less than 6 dollars, 2 for 10 dollars. Some name brands go for as low as 6 dollars and change up to 8+ dollars a pack for the 'hip' brands like American Spirit or Nat Shermans. BUT, so-called little cigars or filtered cigars [20 to a pack] are also really cigarettes, wrapped in a tobacco sheet product as opposed to paper, and with sightly more tobacco, which allow them to be legally classified as cigars and taxed at a MUCH LOWER rate than cigarettes. A pack of little cigars or filtered cigars can cost as little as 2 dollars here. I don't know why so many cigarette smokers haven't figured this scam out yet, but little cigars fly below the radar screen, and tobacco products aren't advertised in the U.S., so these are big reasons for this. You can also just roll your own cigarettes, which is a very cheap alternative. |

Smoking isn't illegal so anyone who wants to smoke is allowed to do so as long as you're not in a pub/club, too close to shopping centre, at the beach, in your car or anywhere else lol. So you give me a break.. P.S congrats on quitting just don't act all mighty. Like most long time smokers, I hated smoking for years before I was finally able to kick it. I'm not acting high and mighty, I just suggest that you spend some time like I do in respiratry wards of hospitals. Nearly everyone in them is there because of smokes. Tabacco has been exploited for centuries by a collection of extremely wealthy families to the detriment of billions. If you really want to strike a blow against the powers that be, start by kicking the habit. I have smoked for fifty-six years, and I have loved every drag. One of my grandfathers smoked unfiltered Lucky Strikes until he was ninety-five. |
