Good idea. If the are positive they pay and are denied benefits. If clean they don't have to pay and receive benefits. Simple.

yeah your right it would cost millions to drug test all the welfare recipients but i do agree with the OP in the the sense it also makes me sick knowing people are skoke ing crack from ssi BUT one test wont stop anybody, thell just stop smokeing for a week or going into rehabe or whatver

Great idea! I am all in favor of taxes being used to drug test entitlement recipients. If they test positive send them to drug free FEMA camps for work and rehab. Should save billions of tax dollars in long run.

Texas tried a similar plan before, in a multi-million dollar program to test student athletes for steroids. After 51,000 drug screenings revealed only 21 testing positive, the funding was cut as an inefficient use of resources. Other states have had similar issues with mass drug tests.

Earlier this year, Florida implemented mandatory drug tests for people seeking welfare benefits, and the state saw no direct savings, caught few drug users and had little effect on the number of welfare applications. Over the program's first four months, Florida spent $45,000 more on drug tests than the screenings saved. And by that point the program was halted due to lawsuits alleging that the state was violating the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure.

It was floated as an idea in a few states a while back but the courts mostly said it was unconstitutional - unreasonable seizure. The government can't impose things on people that they might be able to freely contract for like you did when you applied for that job. Kind of a crappy outcome, but it's probably good in the long run that the state can't force you to pee in a cup.

The thing that gnaws at me and what will make it worse is all the children they have. That's a multiplier effect and will become overwhelming. Really, that's my only problem with it.
