Great story!

I scuba dive (military trained and certified underwater search and rescue), amateur surfer, and I've spent a lot of time in the ocean. Everyone knows you're safe when you see dolphins close by.

Ever notice how they just can't seem to stop smiling? Because they're alive and they love it every second of it.

I was always told as a child that my favorite animal, the elephant would be extinct in my lifetime. I never wanted to believe it...but it's becoming reality faster than I had thought.

I just can't believe how people fail to realize that the tusks they hold in such high regard will be gone forever...

God willing, I will touch and connect with one of these creatures before they are all gone, my heart is breaking..

Pathetic. Can't wait until they catch these pieces of shit.

Robots replace costly US Navy mine-clearance dolphins

For decades, science fiction writers and futurologists have predicted a time when wars are fought at the push of a button and Terminator-like robo-soldiers fight in place of humans. While the rise of drone warfare suggests that vision may be starting to come true, it would seem that it will not be humans who are first in line to lose their military commission.

“We’re in a period of transition,” explains Captain Frank Linkous, head of the US Navy’s Mine Warfare Branch. After nearly 50 years, he says, the Navy plans to phase out its Sea Mammal Program and retire its pods of dolphins and sea lions that are currently used to help locate – and in some cases destroy – sea mines.

“In general, we’re looking to phase out that program beginning in fiscal year 2017,” says Linkous.

Swimming into their place is a new generation of robotic mine hunters, he says. But, the shift comes at a critical time. Earlier this year, Iran threatened to mine the Strait of Hormuz, shutting down the critical waterway to commerce. That threat prompted a renewed debate over investment in mine warfare technology, which many naval experts feel has been long neglected.

The difficulty of finding and clearing mines is why dolphins capabilities’ are so prized: their use of echolocation to spot objects is the biological equivalent of sonar, making them an ideal tool for hunting mines. "We've got dolphins," retired Admiral Tim Keating, who commanded the US 5th Fleet in Bahrain, told National Public Radio, when asked how the US might respond if Iran makes good on its threats.

I wouldn't assume it's Mexican cartel.. The navy stopped using dolphins recently used for sniffing out mines.

Pure damn evil and this has never even been heard of in these area's. It's evil all right... Matter of fact Dolphins were declared almost human a few years.. Its murder! And should be treated as such!

That o/r just blew up/the people employed on that rig, ALL appeared to be foreigners, all of them and from the same country, who a few years ago had pretty big radical problems.

One could only imagine what they have against dolphins.

Dolphins are intelligent, even able to make curses.

Either that or they were just used for target practice as they jumped out of the ocean. Who knows...

Its sick shits that commit these autrocities against defenseless animals that make me think.. there is no hope for the human race... to know this has happened, and not go after the perpetrators is sacraligious and if we do go after them, when they are found, equal harm they inflicted on these animals should be inflicted on the perpetrators. If we as a human species allow this to go unpunished it is an injustice to the world, to our very life force.
