That is bullshit, I have been employed by a union electrical contractor for close to 20years and the owner lacks for nothing and I have made a great wage and built a very nice retirement during those years.......far more than any non-union electrician in my state!

I pay my dues and they leave me alone, I don't go to their meetings or do any other so called "brotherhood" BS. So if you want to make less and have no future then by all means never join a union.

Yeah, the same thing happened in my area. They are fine with the company closing down.

Hostess had already made the employees start paying the company like $10 out of every paycheck. Which ends up being a around $2million if it was $10 a month from each employee for one year.

Then there were no pay raises for 5 years.

This time they wanted each employee to start paying an additional 8% of their wages. Who knows what that amounts to.

Why should an employee have to pay a major corporation to stay in business? They said to take the pay cut or we shut down for good. In my book that is blackmail.

I wonder what kind of pay cuts the people in the higher positions took during that time.

i was a USgovt employee - yes i was union 20+ yrs. had no fuckin clue as a kid - as to their history, ties, agendas, change agents, educational lineage - dude...i was totally clueless.

i was not only an 'area rep'....i took grievances/cases to national arbitration & the NLRB (national labor relations board)

it was 6 mos before i "retired"....where something came across my desk - that alerted me, got my full attention.
it made me realize, that everything 'we' thought/been told - was predicated on a lie. i didnt want to be a tool anymore.

The Hostess workers were played, but it's their own fault. The stupid comments about being "relieved" to lose the best paycheck they'll ever have shows that someone was egging them on here. It may have even been management.

In my view the company WANTED to close it down. The workers were outside the factories, unable to occupy them or vandalize them. The CEO gets more pay this year because the corporation is liquidating.

Now the factories are locked up tight and safe, the workers are gone, and the factories and even the brand name can be sold to another operator, who will hire and rehire workers unencumbered by those labor agreements and pension obligations.

Bimbo, the big Mexican baking company, is a possible buyer who comes to mind.

As I recall from the first (?) thread on this topic a few days ago, the workers' pension was in a "multi-employer" pool, so supposedly they will still receive pension from that pool.

But losing a huge pool member like Hostess must really financially stress the pool. Now, or one more bankruptcy in the future, that pool will blow up and none of the people will get their promised pensions.

It used to be that these promises were very credible, the unions looked solid. Not any more.

Howzat? Did the company lay them off right before filing for liquidation? That would probably be illegal, because a company normally should not take on obligations right before going BK -- to protect creditor assets.

Maybe there's a terrific severance pay package depending on their years of service. No doubt their union already had that locked in for them years ago.
