That seems a bit excessively pessimistic to me.

My parents were raised during the depression, they lived through WWII and they were some of the most generous, optimistic and self sufficient people I know

they didn't believe in debt...if they didn't have cash, they didn't buy it . If they had cash, they were quick to help neighbors, friends and even strangers far away who they heard were in trouble

they didn't need much, and they were raised before it was cool to be cynical and hate your own country.

They weren't cynical about love, and once they got married they tried to stay with the same person even if times got hard.

They really did believe in credos like that Lone Ranger one, even when they were 80 and 90

I do not mean that there aren't good people now, but not a generation with that simplicity of needs, that faithfulness, that lack of cynicism....
