I finished A Dance With Dragons a few weeks ago, and it was amazing. A Song of Ice and Fire is such a great series. But favorite? The Odyssey or Atlas Shrugged.

I love that book, I have tried to get my kids to read it but they aren't interested even if I offer to read it to them. My daughter is in love with "the outsiders". Blech.. :)

Re: what's your favorite book, ever?
So many books...

Asking a bookie to name just one doesn't work.

Favorites:

Fiction:
The Riverworld - Philip Jose Farmer
World of Tiers - Farmer
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley (actually any book of his prior to his drug/eastern mysticism infatuation)
Ape and Essence - Huxley

Non-fiction:
The View Over Atlantis - John Michell
Mothman Prophecies - John Keel
Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds - Mackay

A Song of Ice and Fire is sooo much better. And yes, I read them both.

But I guess Lord of the Rings would be better for children.

Re: what's your favorite book, ever?
I'm going through a bit of a Heinlein phase at the moment - so a couple of obvious ones to begin with:
'Stranger in a Strange Land' and 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'

Too many books to pick an outright favourite tho....
After Heinlein, fave authors are probably, Neal Stephenson - Douglas Adams - Terry Pratchett - George Orwell

However, if the book which has had the most use, qualifies as 'favourite ever' then mine would be a non-fiction reference book in 3 Volumes:
'Burnham's Celestial handbook'
Being an amateur astronomy hobbyist, it's an invaluable reference, and has been used almost every week, for 25+ yrs
(I'm now onto my 3rd set of copies)

I hated a few of those novels, but was not a huge fan of reading fiction in HS when I was forced to read them. I would probably have a different view now.
